Salary £27511 to £33797 per annum, depending on skills and experience (minimum £30942 with relevant PhD).

We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic NMR spectroscopist to fill a Postdoctoral Research Associate/Fellow post within the research group of Dr Jeremy Titman at the School of Chemistry, University of Nottingham. The successful candidate will work on an EPSRC-funded project developing dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) enhanced solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The research programme involves designing new approaches to DNP sample preparation and demonstrating high-impact applications of DNP to materials.

The state-of-the-art Nottingham DNP MAS NMR Facility was commissioned in January 2016 with the help of a £2.4M EPSRC Strategic Equipment grant, as well as additional funding from the University of Nottingham. The Facility’s commercial 395 GHz / 600 MHz /14.1 T DNP-enhanced solid-state NMR spectrometer is based in the Sir Peter Mansfield Imaging Centre which has been recently extended in part to accommodate the Facility.

The School of Chemistry at UoN is one of the leading Chemistry Schools in the UK, recognized internationally for its world leading research portfolio. The School has a thriving research environment with 160 postgraduate students and 60 PDRAs. The School hosts the Centre for Sustainable Chemistry, the first carbon neutral laboratory to be built in the UK and partially funded by GSK. The University of Nottingham has an excellent reputation for research in magnetic resonance, including the award of a Nobel prize for the invention of MR imaging to Prof. Sir Peter Mansfield. Nottingham ranks 8th in the UK for overall research effort (on the “research power” measure which includes both quality and number of research-active staff).

The successful candidate will carry out the following duties:

  • Undertake research in DNP-enhanced solid-state NMR spectroscopy in collaboration with Dr Jeremy Titman.
  • Assist with the preparation of high-quality articles about the results of the research for submission to high-impact scientific journals.
  • Provide research leadership, including expert supervision of both graduate and undergraduate students in Dr Titman’s research group.

Candidates must:

  • Have a PhD (or expect a PhD award in early 2020) in physics or physical chemistry with experience of solid-state NMR spectroscopy.
  • Show demonstrated excellence and productivity in research into solid-state NMR of materials.
  • Have good organisational, communication and team working skills.

Additional experience in DNP-enhanced solid-state NMR spectroscopy would be useful but is not vital for this post.

This post is available on a fixed term contract for 3 years and is available from 16th March 2020. Hours of work are full time (36.25 hours).

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Dr Jeremy Titman jeremy.titman@nottingham.ac.uk. Please note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted.
