Virtual scholarship information day 
On May 30, June 15 and June 28 at 6 p.m., foundation employees and scholarship holders will answer your questions live and give you tips on preparing the documents. Please register at least two days before the date at  studienfoerderung(at)hss.de .

Do you meet the requirements and find yourself in our program ? Then apply!  Our application portal is open from June 15 to July 15, 2023 – applications can only be made via this portal.

Have all the relevant information and files ready for your application (see below) in advance. You can interrupt your application process and continue at a later point in time – as long as the application has not yet been sent. If you have successfully sent your application, you will receive a confirmation (“Application sent … And now?”). If you continue to see the input mask, you have not yet filled out all the mandatory fields. 

Please note that using the portal with Safari can cause problems. We recommend using Firefox or Chrome. If you have technical problems, please contact  ref0405(at)hss.de .

We will inform you about four weeks after the application deadline by e-mail about the outcome of your application and, if necessary, about the next steps.

Important appointments

  • The selection conferences for student support will take place from September 1st to 3rd, 2023 and from September 15th to 17th, 2023 in the Kloster Banz Education Center. When applying, please keep  both dates free, as you cannot choose them freely!
  • The selection conference for doctoral funding will take place on 21./22. September 2023 in Munich.
  • The welcome seminar for new scholarship holders will take place from October 13th to 15th in Kloster Banz.

  • Students : July 15th and January 15th 
  • PhD students : July 15th and January 15th

Please compile the following documents for your application. Please note that incomplete applications cannot be sent in the portal.

  • Tabular curriculum vitae (PDF file)
  • Detailed CV (PDF file): A fully formulated CV should contain the same facts as a tabular CV. However, it gives you the opportunity to respond to the motives behind decisions or to events that have shaped your life. Length: two to four pages.
  • One-page synopsis of study and career goals (PDF file)
  • University entrance qualification (PDF file)
  • If available: pre-diploma certificate/bachelor’s certificate (PDF file)
  • If available: current grade sheet (PDF file) or graded or ungraded university certificates (summarized in one PDF file)
  • If available: Proof of internships (summarized in one PDF file) or successfully completed vocational training (PDF file)
  • Only applicants for journalism funding: up to five work samples (PDF file)  – for work samples from the areas of multimedia, radio or TV, only provide the relevant links due to the amount of data
  • Expert opinion by a (junior) professor, a private lecturer or, in justified exceptional cases, by a research associate with a doctorate to assess the professional qualification. For students in the first or, if applicable, the second semester, the report can come from a teacher (ideally with a professional background in the field of study) ( see template ). 
    Important note: Alternatively, the expert report can be sent directly by the expert to the relevant specialist departmentbe emailed. Be sure to inform them of the application deadline that must be observed! In this case, enter the name and e-mail address of the reviewer in the application portal.
  • Personality reports to assess personality and socio-political commitment. This report should be prepared by a public figure (e.g. mayor, pastor, teacher, etc.) who can assess the applicant’s social commitment (see template ). Important note: Alternatively, the personality assessment can be emailed
    directly by the assessor to the relevant specialist department . Be sure to inform them of the application deadline that must be observed! In this case, enter the name and e-mail address of the reviewer in the application portal.
  • If available: Current certificate of enrollment or certificate of admission (PDF file – can be submitted later)

  • University certificates (graded main seminar and advanced seminar certificates) that were acquired during the course of study (summarized in one PDF file)
  • Detailed synopsis of the doctoral project (PDF file):
    • Detailed justification for the choice of the dissertation topic
    • Detailed content and methodological description of the intended dissertation project
    • Work plan and schedule up to the completion of the dissertation
    • Current status of the dissertation with previous work results
  • Possibly already completed dissertation in another subject area (PDF file)
  • Other scientific publications (cover sheet with reference to place/year of publication; PDF file)
  • Opinions from two university lecturers who are authorized to do doctorates, confirming the applicant’s academic qualifications. One of the two reports must have been prepared by the university lecturer supervising the dissertation ( see template ).  Important note: Alternatively, the reviewers can email
    the reviewers directly to the relevant  specialist department . Be sure to inform them of the application deadline that must be observed! In this case, enter the name and e-mail address of the reviewers in the application portal.
  • If applicable, current certificate of enrollment (PDF file)

You have sent your application – what’s next? Based on the application documents submitted, a pre-selection takes place at the Institute for the Promotion of Gifted Students (see “ Who we are looking for ”). Applicants who appear suitable are invited to a selection conference, where they are examined by an independent selection committee. More …
