Educational Developer (Position No. 25690)

The Centre for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning (CATL) is a Teaching Competence Development unit that works in collaboration with faculty and graduate students to provide leadership, expertise, and support in fulfilling the teaching and learning mission of the University of Manitoba. CATL contributes to the practice and scholarship of teaching through guidance, collaborative problem-solving, and research with respect to teaching and learning effectiveness, curriculum planning, and institutional policies and infrastructure to optimize the learning and teaching experiences of students and faculty.

This position will support the Development and Consultation team in the broad work of teaching competence development across the campus. As the Centre continues to take on new initiatives and support existing programming, in support of teaching and learning, it highlights the need for additional staff with expertise and ability to provide pedagogical support in areas such as teaching consultations, curriculum development and delivery, workshop facilitation, and other related responsibilities.

Position Duties: Graduate Teaching Program, 50%; Develop Teaching Competence, Mentoring and Consultation, 20%; Design, Development and Delivery of Teaching Workshops, 20%; Training, 10%. This position will report to the Team Lead – Development and Consultation.

Day-to-day activities include (but are not limited to):

  • Develop and maintain course and program materials related to the Graduate Teaching Program in collaboration with Development and Consultation team.
  • Facilitate Graduate Teaching Program components, in face-to-face, blended and online modalities, (orientation, institutes, workshops) for graduate students and teaching assistants throughout the year.
  • Meet with students as needed throughout their participation in the Graduate Teaching Program.
  • Grade assessments and assignments submitted by students in the Graduate Teaching Program.
  • Track students’ progress regarding: attendance of institutes, workshops, completion of assessments, and graduation.
  • Correspond with students via email/telephone regarding program components, progress, and completion.
  • Collaborate with Research, Evaluation, and Innovation team regarding program evaluation.
  • Consult within the University of Manitoba with faculty and graduate students on best practices in teaching and learning within post-secondary environments.
  • Provide pedagogical feedback to faculty and graduate students around teaching practices and the design of course/curriculum materials, for face-to-face, blended and online modalities, in post-secondary education.
  • Assist faculty and graduate students in integrating good pedagogical practices into their teaching, courses, and curriculum.
  • Develop and create training for graduate students and teaching assistants on a case-by­ case basis.
  • Work collaboratively with other members of the Centre to develop and implement educational programs for faculty and graduate students (e.g., teaching certificate programs for various modalities, teaching mentor programs, etc.).
  • Participate in the design, development and delivery of various teaching competence initiatives within the Centre and external University of Manitoba Community.
  • Act as point person and manage the work of project team members on designated educational and/or teaching competence projects to organize content and meetings, coordinate project, and produce deliverables when required.
  • Initiate and maintain relationships with faculty to create a network for teaching support and development.
  • Conduct classroom observations and provide feedback to faculty on teaching practices in post-secondary education.
  • Collaborate with other teams within the Centre to complete projects including Educational Technologies, Flexible Learning, Research and Evaluation, and Operations.
  • Deliver face-to-face, blended and online professional development sessions for graduate students and faculty on a variety of topics related to post-secondary teaching and curriculum.
  • Design and develop teaching workshops for faculty and graduate students, in a face to face, blended and online format, within the University of Manitoba.
  • Schedule Faculty and Graduate-level workshops annually and maintain schedule and calendar throughout the year.
  • Coordinate with workshop facilitators regarding availability and presentation of workshop content.
  • Correspond with Workshop Assistant and Media Specialist to ensure advertising for all workshops is prepared on time and advertising is posted on Centre website.
  • Remain current with established and emerging trends in educational development and pedagogical practices within post-secondary teaching and curriculum. (Possible travel).

Qualifications: Formal Education and Training

  • A Master’s degree in Education or related field.
  • A Bachelor of Education (B. Ed) or 2 years program/course development training/experience within post-secondary educational environments.
  • 3 years directly related teaching experience working in multiple teaching and learning modalities: face-to-face, blended and online teaching.

Qualifications: Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated teaching ability.
  • Demonstrated pedagogical knowledge as well as curriculum development and delivery experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide feedback on teaching and course design within post-secondary environments.
  • Exemplary communication skills (both written and verbal) evidenced by the preparation of teaching resources, slides and handouts.
  • Demonstrated knowledge pedagogical practices best suited for post-secondary education.
  • Demonstrated experience developing educational programs.
  • Demonstrated experience working with learning technologies.
  • Strong interpersonal and diplomacy skills required in working with students, staff, faculty, and the general public.
  • Exceptional project management and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated presentation skills and ability to receive feedback.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as a member of a team is essential and should be demonstrated.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and complete work accurately under tight timelines.
  • Ability to make sound independent judgments and utilize problem-solving abilities with a high degree of professionalism.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of University regulations and policies is an asset.
