The Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering at the University of Toronto invites applications from outstanding scholars for a full-time tenure stream position, in the area of Global Engineering at the rank of Assistant Professor. The target start date for this appointment is July 1, 2022.

We strongly encourage innovative, diverse and interdisciplinary approaches to the field of engineering research that address the critical challenges facing the world’s most vulnerable people. We are seeking applications from emerging leaders whose work advances the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Preference will be given to those whose research is in the following strategic areas:

  1. Information Technologies for Global Development;
  2. Food and Nutrition Security; or
  3. Engineering and Human Health.

The successful candidate will hold a budgetary cross-appointment between the Centre for Global Engineering (CGEN) (https://cgen.utoronto.ca) as part of the Institute for Studies in Transdisciplinary Engineering Education and Practice and one of the following academic units: Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry; Department of Civil and Mineral Engineering; Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering; Department of Materials Science and Engineering; Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering; Institute of Biomedical Engineering; Institute for Aerospace Studies.

Applicants must have a PhD related to Global Engineering or a relevant field by the time of appointment or shortly thereafter. The selection will be based on an applicant’s demonstrated excellence in research and teaching, as well as the emerging global impact of their research program. The successful candidate is expected to pursue independent, innovative research at the highest international level, establish an externally funded research program, supervise graduate students, publish articles in internationally recognized top-tier journals in the related field, actively participate in CGEN’s events and activities, and to act as an ambassador for Global Engineering research.

Candidates must provide evidence of excellent research of an internationally competitive caliber, which can be demonstrated by publication in leading journals in the field, or a research pipeline that is at high international levels, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, accolades for creative work, and strong endorsements by referees of high standing. In addition, experience as a post-doctoral fellow or related industry experience is an asset.

Evidence of excellence in teaching will be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, strong letters of reference and the teaching dossier (including a teaching statement, sample course materials, and teaching evaluations, or other evidence of superior performance in teaching-related activities) submitted as part of the application. Other teaching-related activities can include performance as a teaching assistant or course instructor, experience leading successful workshops or seminars, student mentorship, or excellent conference presentations or posters. The Faculty is especially interested in individuals who can demonstrate a commitment to innovative undergraduate teaching and engagement in the scholarship of teaching and learning. The successful candidate will be expected to teach at both the undergraduate and graduate program levels.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
