The Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Ottawa invites applications for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Population Health Data Science. The selected candidate will be offered a tenure-track position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level within the Interdisciplinary School of Health Sciences. The interdisciplinary nature of the School's research and teaching programs encourages inter-faculty collaboration, enabling the recruitment of students from diverse backgrounds (epidemiology, medicine, social sciences, management, etc.).  The ideal candidate should demonstrate an outstanding research dossier in developing and / or applying data science methodologies to generate data-driven solutions, incorporating the differential and interactive social determinants of health. Preference will be given to candidates proposing innovative analytically-driven approaches that aim to achieve impact, sustainability, and health equityThe proposed methodologies may include data analytics, data mining, or machine learning, utilizing both public and other sources of population-level data to inform interventions and policies and to promote health equity. The successful candidate will be asked to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels, on content related to basic programming, artificial intelligence, and data analytics.

Located on the unceded territory of Anishinaabe Algonquin people, in the heart of downtown Ottawa and in close proximity to multiple national agencies such as Health Canada, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Public Health Agency of Canada, and Statistics Canada, the University of Ottawa is recognized as the first and largest bilingual university in North America. The Interdisciplinary School of Health Sciences is home to researchers who investigate health, longevity, and disease using interdisciplinary methodologies, approaches, and perspectives. Research areas of interest include integrative health biosciences, population health, and health technologies. The nominated candidate will benefit from established collaborations between researchers from the School and the Faculty of Engineering, Ottawa Hospitals and affiliated Institutes.

Tier 2 Chairs, tenable for five years and renewable once, are for exceptional emerging researchers, acknowledged by their peers as having the potential to lead in their field. For each Tier 2 Chair, the institution receives $100,000 annually for five years, with an additional $20,000 annual research stipend for first-term Tier 2 Chairs.

Candidates should, at a minimum, be assistant or associate professors, or possess the necessary qualifications to be appointed to these levels. Candidates who are more than 10 years from their highest degree must contact the University of Ottawa directly for questions related to their potential eligibility for a Tier 2 Chair. The institution may nominate a professor or a researcher who is more than 10 years from their highest degree at the time of nomination and has experienced legitimate career interruptions (see acceptable justifications). In such cases, the institution must submit to the Secretariat a formal justification (using the Tier 2 Justification Screening Form), explaining why the nominee is still considered to be an emerging scholar. The University recognizes the legitimate impact that leaves (e.g., parental leave, leave due to illness) can have on a candidate’s record of research achievement and that these leaves will be taken into careful consideration during the assessment process. New CRC nominees are also eligible for infrastructure support from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) to help acquire state-of-the-art equipment essential to their work.

Skills requirements:

  • Education: D. or equivalent and Postdoctoral experience in Population Health Data Science;
  • Required Qualifications: superior research achievements in the CRC’s identified area(s) and proof of interdisciplinary collaborations, a solid record with respect to teaching and training of students at the graduate level, the ability to obtain external research funds. Excellent communication skills in either English or French. Passive knowledge of the other official language in Canada is a requirement for tenure. English-French bilingualism is an asset.

Rank and salary:

Regular tenure-track academic appointment in the Faculty of Health Sciences. Salary scale for an Assistant Professor starts at $89,622 (as of May 1, 2023). Salary scale for an Associate Professor starts at $98,999 (as of May 1, 2023).  Salaries are competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The Werklund School of Education at the University of Calgary invites applications for a Tenure-track Assistant Professor (Teaching and Research) or with tenure Associate Professor (Teaching and Research) position in Early Learning Education.

The appointments will commence July 1, 2024, or at a mutually agreeable date.

We are seeking a scholar who will establish an active research program and demonstrate leadership in Early Learning Education. Applicants must have a strong disciplinary knowledge with an understanding of developmentally appropriate pedagogies that are responsive to diverse learning paths. Preference will be given to candidates whose research focuses on how education is situated within and responsive to complex classrooms given the multifaceted worlds in which we live, learn and play.

The successful candidate will bring additional knowledge and solutions to transform pedagogies in the contemporary early learning landscape. The successful candidate will have a strong foundation in early literacy as a core component of early learning programming. Their research program may involve conducting research on 1) early literacy; 2) play-based learning; 3) social-emotional development of early learners; 4) English language learning in early childhood; and/or 5) current and future complexities of childhood (digital, physical, etc.) and the early learning classroom.

In addition to maintaining an active funded research program, the successful candidate will be expected to supervise graduate and undergraduate students, teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses in their areas of specialization and demonstrate leadership in service, collaboration, and mentorship within the University and the community.  As well, the successful candidate will be expected to engage actively with K-12 communities.

The successful candidate at the Assistant Professor level must demonstrate evidence of a track record of publications in high quality journals, securing external research funding, and effectiveness in teaching at the university level.

The successful candidate at the Associate Professor level must demonstrate evidence of a strong track record of publications in high quality journals, evidence of securing ongoing external research funding, effectiveness in teaching at the university level, and evidence of effective graduate student supervision.

The position provides an opportunity to establish a vigorous, sustainable, externally funded research program in the area of early learning education, contribute to teaching and student supervision, and participate in leadership of related research, education, and service. The Department of Psychology, in the Faculty of Health at York University, invites highly qualified applicants for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC) at the rank of Assistant/Associate position in Computational Neuroscience. This is a tenure-track appointment to the Professorial Stream to commence July 1, 2024.

This is a Canada Research Chair Tier 2 appointment. The Canada Research Chairs (CRC) program seeks to attract outstanding researchers for careers at Canadian universities. Tier 2 Chairs are intended for exceptional emerging scholars (i.e., within 10 years of attaining their highest degree at the time of nomination, with consideration for career breaks) who have the acknowledged potential to lead their field of research. Appointment to a Tier 2 Chair is for five years, is renewable once, and comes with enhanced research support from the program. Applicants who are more than 10 years from their highest degree (and where career breaks exist, including maternity leave, extended sick leave, clinical training, etc.) may have their eligibility for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair assessed through the program’s Tier 2 justification process. The successful candidate will engage with, and benefit from, the VISTA program, which focuses on the intersection between biological and computational vision research. The VISTA program is supported by a total of $120 million in funding over seven years. The successful candidate will be eligible for enhanced start-up funds from VISTA. A key faculty resource includes access to a state-of-the-art MRI facility dedicated to research.

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to join unique interdisciplinary Organized Research Units (ORUs) at York, including the Centre for Vision Research, the Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Society, and the new Centre for Integrative and Applied Neuroscience.  The successful applicant can also elect to become a member of the Connected Minds program, which focuses on scholarship in three main themes: I. Co-creating Research for Societal Needs and Predicted Impact; II. Fundamentals of Social Interaction: Neural, Algorithmic, and Social Networks; and III. Designing and Developing Socially Responsible Technologies. The successful applicant can also elect to be considered for appointment to the Vector Institute for Artificial Intelligence as a Vector Faculty Affiliate or Faculty Member.  Located in Toronto, The Vector Institute is home to over 700 active researchers with broad expertise in AI.

Candidate Qualifications:

Degree: PhD in Psychology, Computational Neuroscience, Neuroscience or related field is required. We welcome applicants with expertise in developing and applying innovative computational methodologies (e.g., big data analytics, supervised and unsupervised deep models, reinforcement learning, dynamical systems, Bayesian models, information theoretic approaches) to diverse forms of visual neuroscience data (e.g., behavioural, fMRI, EEG, single-unit or multi-unit recordings). Post-doctoral experience is strongly preferred.

Scholarship:

  • A coherent and well-articulated program of research and specialization in computational neuroscience with application to visual perception, broadly defined.
  • A record or evident promise of generating innovative, substantive, rigorous, and as appropriate, externally funded research. For Associate Professor level, record of external grants is required.
  • A record or evident promise of making influential contributions and demonstrating excellence in the field (e.g., publications in top-tier journals, invited presentations, patents). 

Teaching:

  • A record or evident promise of excellence in teaching and dedication to students. Evidence of excellence or promise of excellence in teaching will be provided through a teaching statement that articulates teaching philosophy and documents teaching and supervisory accomplishments and pedagogical innovations, including curricular development, teaching evaluations, supervision of research students and letters of reference).
  • Ability to teach graduate-level classes in computational methods for statistical modeling, computational/theoretical neuroscience, and undergraduate level classes in statistics & research methods for psychology students.
  • Suitability for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies, given that the position will involve graduate teaching and supervision.
  • For Associate Professor level, a record of graduate student supervision, as well as undergraduate teaching experience, is required.

The ideal candidate will have a nationally recognized record of achievement in literary fiction, including at least one major publication. They should also have demonstrated excellence in teaching and mentoring roles, as they must be able to teach graduate creative writing courses and supervise creative theses by PhD and MA students; they will also teach undergraduate literature and creative writing courses at all levels. The successful applicant will assume the role of Co-Director of Creative Writing, contributing to student advising and administration of the creative writing program as well as our Writer-in-Residence and Public Reading Series programs; helping to edit The Fiddlehead may also be expected. Applicants should have graduate training in English and/or Creative Writing; a PhD is preferred and an MA is required. Demonstrated knowledge of the publishing world is an asset. A small, research-intensive department with a reputation for high-quality teaching located on unceded Wolastoqey lands in New Brunswick’s capital city, UNB’s Department of English offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs, including a longstanding creative writing stream in the MA and a newer creative writing stream in the PhD that is one of only two such programs in Canada.

The Department of Microbiology and Immunology in the Faculty of Science at The University of British Columbia in Vancouver seeks candidates for a tenure-track Assistant Professor to start no earlier than July 1, 2024. By 2027, the campus will have ~650,000 sq feet of laboratory, classroom and discussion spaces, and will eventually host a total of ~600 researchers, students, and staff. Along with growth in the existing areas of research and education in basic sciences, the institute seeks to add newer activities to its programme. TIFRH is looking to initiate activities in Computational and Mathematical Sciences in general, and particularly in Data Science, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. The goals are two-fold: (i) fundamental research, exploring theoretical underpinnings, in order to address challenging and emerging problems, (ii) innovations leading to data driven tools and techniques to tackle large-scale fundamental and practical problems. We offer a 9-month scholarship of PLN 2200 PLN per month financed from the NCN SONATA 15 Project No. 2019/35/D/ST5/00958 “Graphene biosensing and biophysics” led by dr. Izabela Kamińska. This exciting interdisciplinary project is realized in a collaboration with Prof. Tinnefeld from Ludwig-Maximilian University in Munich.

With this project, we aim at establishing a novel platform for the new field of graphene/hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) biosensing and biophysics. There are two major players: 2D material (graphene or graphene/hBN heterostructure) and DNA origami. On one hand, we have high quality 2D materials with outstanding optoelectronic properties but chemically inert. On the other hand, we have DNA origami structures folded solely from single-stranded DNA which allows for introduction of almost any entity (for example a chemical group) with very high (nanometer) precision. We want to use these building blocks to construct biosensors operating at single-molecules level as well as to investigate macromolecules which are of biological interest.

Responsibilities:

  • Preparation of graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) substrates and graphene/hBN-based electrodes.
  • Preparation of multilayer graphene and single-molecule measurements on multilayer graphene using DNA origami nanostructures.
  • Cooperation with researchers, including communication with English-speaking colleagues.
