Doctoral Student In Agent-Based Modeling And Atmospheric Research

The ATMOS team has recently received significant research grants from the Academy of Finland and Tiina and Antti Herlin Foundation to use artificial intelligence and machine learning methods, in particular agent-based modeling (ABM), for atmospheric and climate change research. We are looking for a highly motivated doctoral student to carry out specific research projects related to these grants.

The main responsibilities will be to develop agent-based models for assessment of air pollution and climate emissions of human activities, with focus on traffic and internet usage. You will be part of the AI and Machine Learning team in the ATMOS Group, where currently two other researchers are working on the same grants. As a part of the ATMOS Group, other duties include supervising scientific research according to your experience, maintaining and building international collaboration networks of ATMOS, as well as participation in teaching as a part of the curriculum at University of Oulu.

The contract will be made for two (2) years, including a trial period of six (6) months.


We expect high motivation, excellent analytical and researcher skills, and ability to achieve the pre-defined goals. As member of an externally funded project team, you are expected to continually write and publish scientific articles in international peer-reviewed journals documenting the achievements of the work.

You should hold a M.Sc. degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Atmospheric science or a related field. If you have completed any of the online courses (e.g. on Coursera), please include those in your CV as well. Prior experience in java, agent-based modeling, machine learning, neural networks, complex systems, data analysis and programming is a strong advantage.

Fluency in written and spoken English, and good communication and teamwork skills are also required. Practical familiarity with supervision, activity in the scientific community, scientific work abroad, and other international activities are additional strong merits.


The salary will be based on the demand level 2-4 chart for the teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition to the basic salary, an additional salary component (max. 50% of the basic salary level) will be paid based on personal achievements and performance.
