The University of Wuppertal invites applications for a

Professorship (§ 36 HG NRW) in “Zoology (evolution and biodiversity)” 

(legal basis: W 2 LBesG NRW).

The position will be based in the School of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.

The position is to be taken up as soon as possible.


The successful candidate is expected to demonstrate an independent research profile with a proven expertise in the field of symbioses between animals and microorganisms as evidenced by independent publications in international peer-reviewed journals. Possible research areas are, for example, the evolution of symbioses with phototrophic organisms as well as aspects of biodiversity, morphology, histology and physiology, including omics analyses at the genome and transcriptome level. We are looking for candidates with knowledge in bioinformatics, particularly in the field of next-generation sequencing data. Contributing to the focus area “Sustainable chemistry for people and the environment” are expected. Successful candidates must be willing to solicit external funding and prove corresponding experience.

Teaching responsibilities include the entire subject of zoology. Teaching in the bachelor’s and master’s programmes in the fields of biology (Two-subject Bachelor of Arts and Master of Education) as well as in Science (“Sachunterricht”) and Special Needs Education is expected.


Besides pedagogical suitability, which has to be proven by appropriate previous experience or, in exceptional cases, demonstrated by excellent performance during the appointment procedure, the applicant is expected to have a particular aptitude for scientific work substantiated by the outstanding quality of a doctorate. Further scientific achievements must be demonstrated additionally and will be evaluated exclusively and comprehensively during the appointment procedure. The requirements for appointment to a first professorship include junior professorships, habilitations, employment as a research assistant at a university or at a non-university research institution and scientific positions in business, in administration or another social field in Germany or abroad.

The successful candidate is expected to actively support academic autonomy at the university.
