Internships

The IAEA accepts a limited number of interns each year. The internships are awarded to persons studying towards a university degree or who have recently received a degree (see Internship web pages for further details).

The purpose of the programme is:

To provide interns with the opportunity to gain practical work experience in line with their studies or interests, and expose them to the work of the IAEA and the United Nations as a whole.

To benefit the IAEA’s programmes through the assistance of qualified students specialized in various professional fields.

The duration of an internship is normally not less than three months and not more than one year.

Organizational Setting

The Director General’s Office (DGO) provides leadership and coordination for all IAEA activities at the executive level for meeting Member States’ needs, and achieving a one-house approach and a results-based management.

The Office for Public Information and Communication provides objective, accurate and timely information about the IAEA and nuclear developments that fosters public understanding of the IAEA’s global roles. It also provides advice to the Director General on relations with the media and organizes press briefings. The Office coordinates the communication activities for the rest of the house and assists in the media aspects of major IAEA events and conferences.

The Media, Multimedia and Public Outreach Section has corporate responsibility for relations with the media and the public, as well as for producing audio and video materials to promote the IAEA’s activities.

Main Purpose

Climate change interns will be provided with the opportunity to gain practical work experience in documenting and demonstrating the role and impact of nuclear technology and science in climate change mitigation, adaptation and monitoring, and in organizing outreach activities in connection with the IAEA’s messaging on these and related issues.

In close cooperation with staff from the Office of Public Information and Communication (OPIC) and across the IAEA, they will support the preparation, coordination and implementation of IAEA activities in the run up to and at COP27 and other climate events.

Functions / Key Results Expected

  • Assist with developing and implementing the IAEA’s communication strategy on climate change mitigation, adaptation, and monitoring, and the Sustainable Development goals, with special focus on maximizing impact ahead of and during the annual Conference of the Parties (COPs).
  • Assist with cross-departmental planning and coordination on climate change related communication activities.
  • Draft articles, press releases and other relevant content under the guidance and in close cooperation with senior OPIC staff.
  • Research relevant media and assist with reaching out to them.
  • Assist with organizing events, including for media, and other related activities.

Applicant Eligibility

  • Candidates must be a minimum of 20 years of age and have completed at least three years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a first degree.
  • Candidates may apply up to one year after the completion of a bachelor’s, master’s or doctorate degree.
  • Candidates must not have previously participated in the IAEA’s internship programme.
  • Good written and spoken English essential; fluency in any other IAEA official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish or Russian) an asset.
  • Candidates must attach two signed letters of recommendation to their application.
