UBC PUBLIC SCHOLARSHIP AWARD, CANADA

This award is part of the  UBC Public Scholars Initiative   (PSI) which aims to create links, a community and capacities for doctoral students who wish to explicitly link their doctoral work to a field of public interest and integrate wider forms. and more relevant to the career. scholarship in their doctoral training process.

Up to $ 10,000 twice, for a total of $ 20,000 per student, is available to support an innovative / collaborative scholarship that the student would not otherwise be able to pursue. Funding can be used to:

  • Research allowance (including professional development or travel allowance related to university work)
  • Student allowance, if the student’s current source of funding does not allow the alternative project (s)

Funding is available each year for up to 30 to 40 new students. Students may be eligible for renewal for a second year (pending new PSI funding).

ELIGIBILITY

  • UBC Vancouver doctoral students (PhD, EdD and DMA) from grades 1 to 5
    • Applicants must have completed no more than 48 months of doctoral study by August 31, 2020
    • Applicants must be enrolled in a UBC doctoral program as of September 1, 2020
    • Applicants in 6th year (48 to 60 months of doctorate) will only be accepted in the most exceptional circumstances

Requirements for all funded students:

  • Presentation of a report at the end of their first (and if applicable, second) year of funding
  • Presentation of their work at a PhDs Go Public Network event   . 

All students, teachers and collaborators will be invited to complete a questionnaire at the end of their funding / participation. Student submissions and completion of studies and career outcomes will also be reviewed as part of the evaluation of this pilot initiative.

EVALUATION CRITERIA

  • Past achievements and future promises of the student. The extent of interest and accomplishment will be important, as well as an indication of the student’s suitability for the proposed project.
  • The relationship of the project with the objectives of the ISP, which is to encourage and allow a broader conception of doctoral training, such as:
    • Students gain experience in the environments and types of scholarships that they can productively engage in post-graduate
    • Students’ work is assessed as part of the degree, ensuring that it is of the highest quality and signaling that the university considers these various forms of scholarships worthy of recognition
    • Students benefit from better career opportunities and foster a positive public perception of the value of the doctorate
    • Students can contribute to the public good in various ways through rigorous scholarships
  • Quality of the proposed scholarship. The following factors will be taken into account:
    • The work requires a high level of expertise in one or more disciplines and / or methodology
    • Objectives are clearly defined, realistic and identify important issues
    • Adequate preparation and understanding of the subject is indicated
    • Appropriate methods are proposed to achieve the objectives
    • Plans for documenting and disseminating work are appropriate and effective
    • Work has meaning and is likely to contribute positively to the public good
  • Need for alternative funding sources
  • Attention will also be paid to the scope of the initiative in all disciplines

(3) Download the   completed application form   and your  Canadian CV   in a single pdf file (see instructions for more details) on  this link  .  

(4) Once the form has been downloaded, you can modify and  save it by renaming it  . 

(5) For the obligatory letter of support from the supervisor and the optional letter (s) of support from the collaborators, your letter writers must go to  this page  . You can open the page and share the link with them. 

(6) This will complete your request.
