Professor in Endocrinology combined with a Position as Specialist Physician/Consultant

A permanent position as Professor in Endocrinology. The position will be located at the Department of Clinical Sciences in Malmö and will be combined with employment as a specialist physician/consultant at Skåne University Hospital.

Work duties

The Position is combined, i.e., research, teaching and clinical duties in Endocrinology are included. Skåne University Hospital conducts activities in Endocrinology at the Hospitals in Lund and Malmö. Clinical Research and teaching, including post graduate studies, take place in both Lund and Malmö.

Further duties may arise as part of the position.

Qualifications

Pursuant to Chapter 4 Section 3 of the Higher Education Ordinance, a person who has demonstrated both research and teaching expertise shall be qualified for employment as a professor. To qualify for the position, applicants must have undergone at least five weeks training in teaching and learning in higher education, or acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way, unless exceptional circumstances apply. For teaching staff at Lund University, the general assessment criterion applies: to be suitable, and otherwise have the abilities that are needed to carry out the duties in a satisfactory way

The applicant is to have specialist qualifications in Endocrinology and Diabetology.

As the position as professor is combined with that of a specialist physician, applicants must, at the start of their employment, possess the knowledge of the Swedish language required to practice the medical profession (in accordance with the National Board of Health and Welfare’s definition, which also accepts equivalent knowledge of Norwegian or Danish).

Grounds for assessment

The applicant is to have demonstrated expertise of significance for the subject in both research and teaching. The assessment will place particular emphasis on research expertise.

The applicant is to have demonstrated research expertise by maintaining a high national and international level as a researcher. Furthermore, it is an additional qualification if the applicant is the principal investigator of research grants awarded in national or international competition. Experience of translational research and research that can be implemented in public healthcare and/or industry is an additional qualification. Ongoing national and international research collaborations within clinical treatment and translational research are particularly relevant qualifications.

In view of the strong genetics, epidemiology and basic research in the area of metabolic diseases, it is of the utmost importance that the applicant can interact effectively with the scientists at the LUDC, and hereby strengthen the links between healthcare and academia. Therefore, well-documented collaborations with clinical, as well as basic, genetics and epidemiology researchers, is a prerequisite for the position and hence of great merit in the assessment.

Furthermore, assuming responsibility for and developing existing patient cohorts, as well as creating new ones for future clinical research questions is essential for LUDC and the Medical Faculty. Specifically, this implies the development of research that can form the basis of precision medicine, an overarching goal of LUDCIRC. For these reasons, the applicant must be experienced in establishing and leading clinical studies.

The research environment at LUDC and EXODIAB has a clear focus on innovation. It is therefore of great merit if the applicant has verified experience of developing research that seeds innovation and leads to implementation in industry and/or health care.

Leadership in academia and/or industry will be of further merit in the assessment for the position, as well as experience of reviewing for national and international research boards and foundations.

The applicant is to have demonstrated teaching expertise in both tutoring and supervision, in the first, second and third cycles of study. Emphasis will be placed on the ability to supervise doctoral students, as well as administrative expertise.

Documented leadership abilities and the capacity to interact with wider society will also be taken into account.

As the Position will be combined with employment as a specialist physician/consultant is it a prerequisite to master the Swedish language at the start of the employment.
