Public Health Informatics Fellowship Program (PHIFP)

The Public Health Informatics Fellowship Program (PHIFP) provides on-the-job training for professionals to apply expertise in information science, computer science, and information technology to address current and future informatics needs. While working in CDC programs to enhance our agency’s informatics workforce, fellows help state and local health departments and international public health agencies solve complex public health informatics challenges.

Public health informatics is the systematic application of knowledge about systems that capture, manage, analyze and use information to improve population health. The Public Health Informatics Fellowship Program (PHIFP) provides applied public health informatics training to fellows to apply computer science and information technology to public health problems.

Eligibility Requirements (Criteria)

1) A doctoral (PhD, MD, PharmD) or masters level degree from an accredited academic institution in one of the following:

  • Public health, medicine, health care, health services research
  • Computer science, information science, information systems
  • Statistics
  • Epidemiology
  • Public health informatics or related discipline

2) Informatics Experience: one year of informatics experience for doctoral level candidates and three years of informatics experience for masters level candidates in one of the following fields:

  • Public health informatics
  • Health informatics or related field
  • Information systems
  • Information science
  • Computer science
  • Information technology

3) Public Health Experience: Documented one year of experience for doctoral level candidates and three years of experience for masters level candidates in one of the following areas:

  • Public health
  • Related healthcare profession

4) Research Requirements: Documented experience in performing research or evaluation during or after academic training is required. This includes publications, thesis, poster presentations, or a research or evaluation proposal.

5) Relocation:  is required to various programs throughout CDC. Some assignments may also occur in other locations.

6) Citizenship: Non-U.S. citizens must be legal permanent residents or eligible for J1, TN, H-1B, or OPT-EAD (STEM Extension) visas prior to the program’s start date.

  • Those holding a doctoral level degree who begin their fellowship program in the Classes of 2018 and beyond are paid the equivalent of a GS 12, Step 3 salary ($68,790).
  • Those holding a master’s level degree are paid the equivalent of a GS 11, Step 3 salary ($57,393). (

  • Fellows may be eligible for a salary increase after one year of appointment, based on performance and written recommendation by appropriate management officials.
  • Relocation expenses are not authorized for those who begin their fellowship program in the Classes of 2018 and beyond.

  • Write your personal statement (in essay form) by answering these questions:
    • What are your career plans after graduating from PHIFP? Why?
    • How will PHIFP help you fulfill these plans?
    • How will PHIFP complement you previous training and experience?
  • Identify three but not more than five people to write letters of recommendation on your behalf.
  • Obtain copies of transcripts for all qualifying degrees.

Second Step:  Complete Online Application
