The Institute for Indigenous Research and Studies of the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Arts invites applications for a tenure-track position with a specialization in Contemporary Indigenous Artistic/Cultural Practices with a start date of July 1, 2022, in support of French-language programs and research at the IIRS.
Title of the Position: Assistant professor level, but higher ranks will be considered under exceptional circumstances.
Duties: Responsibilities for the position include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, supervising undergraduate and graduate students, and providing vision and leadership related to the development of teaching, research, and outreach. The successful candidate will be a critical resource for the development of graduate programming in Indigenous Studies, particularly in French, and expected to carry out a robust research program, seek external funding, demonstrate a sustained commitment to active participation in the administrative activities of the unit and the faculty, participate in the activities of professional organizations and the advancement of the University’s Indigenization strategy. Given the nature of the position, preference will be given to qualified Indigenous candidates with genuine connections to their Indigenous community and whose scholarship is shaped by those connections.
Affirming that Aboriginal peoples are active knowledge creators in their own right, the successful candidate will be expected to open up key conversations about worldviews and knowledge structures as expressed through their artistic practice, as well as avenues for local artistic and cultural creation and engagement with galleries, theatres and museums, including collaborative and intellectual research spaces on campus (CreatorSpace and LabO).
The successful candidate will make important connections to areas such as communications, theatre, visual arts, music, cultural and literary studies. Depending on the profile of the successful candidate, programmatic offerings could be cross-listed with existing programs in other departments (visual arts, theatre, and literature) in the Faculty of Arts or in other faculties.
Terms: Tenure-track position
Wage: Salary scale for an Assistant Professor starts at $87,856 (as of May 1, 2021).

Required Skills: The successful candidate will be an artist deploying Indigenous traditions to address colonial dislocation and marginalization offering new forms of critique through diverse artistic (film, literature, drama, fine arts, music, etc.) and cultural practices of Indigenous nations, leading to the creation of cutting-edge theories and methodologies about land, place, territory, gender, and sexuality.
The successful candidate will have the following qualifications:
- A PhD in Indigenous Studies or related field;
- evidence of innovative pedagogical excellence including project-based instruction at a post-secondary institution;
- evidence of an established and innovative research program, a record of refereed publications, and knowledge mobilization;
- an ability to attract external funding; and
- demonstrated skills in working collaboratively with Indigenous communities, artists and cultural producers, as well as with diverse populations.
As this position is intended for a French language-dominant scholar, at the time of tenure, active knowledge of French is required, with passive competency in English.
