DUTIES

This bi-partite appointment has teaching, service and field education responsibilities within Human Services Programs.

The School of Social Work and Human Service invites applications for a 3 year limited term faculty appointment at the Assistant Teaching Professor rank to teach in both the Education Assistant and Community Support Certificate (EACS) Program and the Human Service Diploma (HUMS) Program. The successful applicant will have a strong practice background in inclusive and empowering educational and community support work with individuals with disabilities as well as a working knowledge of direct support roles in school and community settings for Certified Education Assistants and community support workers. Applicants must demonstrate proven expertise in working effectively with Indigenous peoples and communities with a particular focus and sensitivity to the intersection of disability and Indigeneity.

The Human Services Program integrates a strong inter-cultural context into all curricula, with a particular focus on Indigenous and Secwepemc understanding . Students in the diploma and certificate program have diverse practice and educational backgrounds and are prepared to enter professional practice, as well as to advance to undergraduate degree programs such as Social Work or Child and Youth Care. The candidate is expected to demonstrate an understanding of student development theory and have demonstrated experience teaching at the entry level in a post-secondary environment.

Major responsibilities will include teaching in a range of theory and practice courses that introduce students to foundational skills in education and community support, special education human services, social work, and child and youth care; and participating in a team approach to cohort learning that ensures scaffolded learning and developmental learning outcome. This position will involve supporting EACS students in skill development in practicum experiences as well as coordination of Field Education for both the EACS Certificate and the HUMS diploma. Participation in School of Social Work and Human Services initiatives, and service across the Faculty and University is expected with a focus on student and program support.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Relevant Master’s degree in Special Education, Child and Youth Care, Social Work, Education or another relevant discipline required. PhD/EdD preferred;
  • A minimum of 5 years (full-time equivalent) of direct human service experience within the last 10 years required . Experience in Educational settings is prefered. Leadership and supervisory experience in K-12 inclusive education settings or the Community Living sector is desirable.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the inclusion and empowerment of people with disabilities in school and community settings with a clear understanding of the historical legacy of social marginalization, medicalization and institutionalization of people labeled with physical and cognitive impairments.
  • Ability to network effectively with community Social Service agencies as well as classroom and resource teachers and school principals
  • Working familiarity with current instructional methods and support practices in inclusive special education, trauma-informed education and/or community settings. The ability to teach inclusive practices to entry level support workers is required.
  • A minimum of 2 years’ (full-time equivalent) post-secondary education instructional experience; preferably with entry-level certificate or diploma students required or 5 years K-12 teaching experience with direct experience working with Educational assistants
  • Demonstrated experience or training in curriculum development preferred.
  • Experience with field education placements, working with agency field instructors and providing agency supervision for students is an asset.
  • Academic or professional leadership and a strong orientation to community service is preferred
  • Demonstrated experience in integrating Indigenous knowledge and teaching methods (Truth and Reconciliation Commission Call to Action 62)
  • Proven skills in building student capacity for intercultural understanding, empathy, and mutual respect (TRC CA 62)
  • Teaching excellence, including developing culturally safe and appropriate curricula (TRC CA 10)
  • Proven expertise in working effectively with Indigenous people and preparing HUMS professionals to work effectively with Indigenous people.
