The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering at Western University invites applicants for a tenured Tier 1 Canada Research Chair (CRC) position in the area of Resilience and Sustainability of Infrastructures. The appointment will be tenured and at the rank of Professor or Associate Professor. The successful candidate will submit an external nomination for a seven-year term position as a Tier 1 CRC, eligible for renewal once to a maximum of two seven-year terms as a CRC. The nomination should be submitted to the CRC portal before the deadline of October 22, 2024. The appointment at Western University will be conditional on the success of the CRC nomination. They should have a track record of attracting and training graduate students and postdoctoral fellows and have an established record of national and international collaborations. They should be committed to the principles of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI), and Decolonization in their professional practice. The candidate will be expected to lead a world-class research program with robust external funding and to teach undergraduate and graduate courses within the Civil and Environmental Engineering program. In addition, the candidate will be expected to supervise graduate students and participate in other educational and professional activities including administrative activities of the Department, Faculty and University. The ability to become eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer in Ontario is required for this appointment.

The University of Ottawa and its Faculty of Science invites applications for a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) with applications related to Quaternary science, which may include paleoecology, paleolimnology, paleoclimatology, carbon cycling, and modern surface processes.

The successful candidate will work in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences and should be an established researcher who have received widespread recognition for their sustained accomplishments in applying radiotracers and isotopes to investigate knowledge gaps in Quaternary science. This position will involve strategic long-term collaboration with, and use of, the André E. Lalonde AMS Laboratory and other geochemical facilities including the Ján Veizer Stable Isotope Laboratory hosted within University of Ottawa. The AEL AMS Lab is a Canadian National Laboratory, which hosts unique instrumentation including a MICADAS (2022) and a recently upgraded 3MV AMS (2023) along with a world-class sample preparation facility for radiocarbon and actinides analyses. The candidate will have extensive analytical experience in AMS techniques and a long-term research vision for incorporating AMS technology in their research program.

Analytical laboratories on campus include microbeam (SEM, TEM, EMPA), X-ray (SCXRD, PXRD, XRF, Micro-CT), and geochemical (LA-ICP-MS, ICP-ES, ICP-OES) facilities, and noble gas and stable isotope instrumentation. The University of Ottawa is recognized nationally and internationally as one of the best universities in the country and the largest bilingual university in the world.

Tier 1 Chairs, tenable for seven years and renewable once, are for outstanding researchers acknowledged by their peers as world leaders in their fields. For each Tier 1 Chair, the institution receives $200,000 annually for seven years. Nominees for Tier 1 Chair positions must be full professors or associate professors who are expected to be promoted to the full professor level within one or two years of the nomination. Alternatively, if they come from outside the academic sector, nominees must possess the necessary qualifications to be appointed at these levels. New CRC nominees are also eligible for infrastructure support from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) to help acquire state-of-the-art equipment essential to their work.

  • Required Qualifications: Outstanding independent research achievements in the CRC’s identified area(s) and proof of interdisciplinary collaborations, a solid record with respect to teaching and training of students at the graduate level, strong record of external research funding, excellent communication skills in either English or French. Passive knowledge of the other official language in Canada is a requirement for tenure. English-French bilingualism is an asset.

Duties: The responsibilities include: 1) teaching across the broad spectrum of Earth and environmental sciences; 2) supervision of BSc, MSc and PhD students; 3) maintaining a strong track record of attracting research funding, 4) preparing large grant applications and overseeing their implementation to ensure funding requirements are met and infrastructure is maintained (the 6-year cycle of the Major Science Initiative funding for the AEL-AMS was successfully renewed in 2023), and 5) promoting a competitive publication record demonstrating impactful scientific contributions.

Rank and salary: Regular tenure-track academic appointment in the Faculty of Science. The salary range for a full professor is $118,864 to $207,511 (based on the May 1, 2023, scale of the collective agreement between APUO and the University of Ottawa). Salaries are competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The Department of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Guelph invites applications for a tenure-track, teaching focused position at the Assistant Professor level.

The Department of Biomedical Sciences, Ontario Veterinary College (OVC), University of Guelph is seeking applications to fill a position in Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine. Although this position will have a principal activity of teaching in the department (up to 5 courses/year or 70%), the candidate will also maintain both a scholarly activity (10%) and service (20%) distribution of effort. The successful candidate will have a PhD degree in an area related to the field of stem cell biology and regenerative medicine and a demonstrated ability to effectively teach undergraduate and graduate courses in this and related biomedical fields. The successful applicant will serve as the faculty advisor for our Collaborative Specialization in Regenerative Medicine graduate program.  The successful applicant must have a minimum of 2 years of university teaching, training or postdoctoral experience and will also demonstrate a commitment to the scholarship and research mission of the Department by employing scholarly approaches and innovative methodologies in fields relevant to Biomedical Sciences. This includes but is not necessarily limited to, teaching and learning, knowledge translation and transfer, curricular development, methods of delivery and assessment, etc.

The Department of Biomedical Sciences is responsible for delivering professional and specialist undergraduate education, and research training. In addition to courses in the DVM and BSc programs, the Department offers graduate course-based Masters, and thesis-based MSc and PhD programs in each of the departmental discipline fields. A large component of the research agenda within the Department of Biomedical Sciences is in translating fundamental research into practical applications to enhance human and/or animal health, with expertise in Reproductive Biology and Development, Cardiovascular Physiology, Pharmacology and Toxicology, Cancer and Cell Biology, Stem cell and Regenerative Medicine and Neuroscience. Several faculty in the Department hold leadership roles in the Centre for Cardiovascular Investigations (CCVI), the Bench to Bedside Institute for Translational Health Research and Innovation and an emerging center in Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine. There are also extensive opportunities for collaborative studies.

We are seeking a candidate whose current or proposed research program and vision align with those of SENS’ faculty and academic programs in the area of sustainability, who ideally has experience working in research teams spanning the natural and social sciences, and who can work with partners outside of academia. The successful candidate should be able to teach in multiple SENS sustainability courses including one or more of Regenerative Sustainability, Systems Thinking, Sustainability in Theory and Practice, and Sustainability in Action. A candidate who has worked outside of academia may also be well-positioned to support professional skills development across our professional and thesis-based programs. We will prioritize candidates who clearly articulate how their research and teaching contributions will enhance SENS’ sustainability-related research and teaching themes.

  • Evidence as an emerging scholar in solution-oriented, interdisciplinary and/or transdisciplinary research with a focus on sustainability.
  • High-quality publications or other research outputs with impact (candidate to articulate), appropriate for stage of career and the candidate’s field of research.
  • Demonstrated success in obtaining competitively awarded research funding, ideally including grants from the Canadian Tri-Agencies (SSHRC, NSERC, CIHR) or similarly competitive programs.
  • Experience with the supervision of students and/or other highly qualified personnel.
  • Evidence of graduate and/or undergraduate teaching; online or hybrid teaching experience is an asset.

The Department of Plant, Food, and Environmental Sciences is home to a vibrant team of scientists and instructors focused on four priority areas: plant and horticultural sciences, environmental sciences and agroecology, food science, and landscape architecture. Related areas of Departmental research strengths include crop physiology, soil health, climate change, organic agriculture, agronomy, horticulture, landscape architecture, food science, molecular biology, and agroecology. The department also benefits from strong collaborations with the agricultural industry, and research stations of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, throughout the Atlantic region and beyond. Cropping systems in Atlantic Canada are diverse with industry sectors linked to perennial (blueberry, grapes, tree fruits) and annual (potatoes, vegetables, cereals, pulses, and oilseeds) crop production. Other regional opportunities also include maple production, forestry, Christmas tree, and ornamental horticulture. Agri-environmental challenges include stress on crops and natural ecosystems due to increasing disease and insect pressure exacerbated by climate extremes and soil health issues.

The successful candidate is expected to develop a productive, innovative and competitively funded research program working in plant pathology that is recognized regionally, nationally, and internationally. Potential areas of interest include but are not limited to:

  • Epidemiological approaches using spatial/temporal digital technologies and data analytics,
  • Omics approaches applied to plant pathology,
  • Host-pathogen interactions within the context of changing environments,
  • Applying artificial intelligence and smart technologies, to study pathogens and identify management solutions,

The successful candidate will be required to teach undergraduate students as well as mentor  and train graduate students. The teaching assignment will reflect the expertise of the successful candidate within the needs of the department and may include courses at the entry- and/or upper- level. Service responsibilities include development of good working relationships with appropriate commodity and community groups, industry and government. The candidate is expected to become an active, engaged member of the Department, Faculty and University, and is encouraged to maintain professional membership in the Nova Scotia Institute of Agrologists. It is anticipated that the new hire will have a distribution of effort of 20% teaching, 40% research and 40% service, and that the service component of this job will be directed toward: (1) service to the Arrell Food Institute to help reach its vision, goals and deliver on its programs; and (2) outreach to the non-academic community to raise the University of Guelph’s reputation as “Canada’s Food University”. The anticipated duration of the Chair appointment is 5 years, and thereafter the distribution of effort will revert to the standard 40% teaching, 40% research and 20% service.

The successful applicant will work at the intersection of sustainable food systems, cultural, economic, and/or social practices and processes relating to food geographies; and agricultural, health, labour, and safety regulation policies. As well, the Arrell Chair in Food, Policy & Society will play an important role in advancing the strategic objectives of the College of Social and Applied Human Sciences. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to undergraduate and/or graduate courses in their area(s) of expertise through scholarly teaching and participate in the administration of the Arrell Food Institute. About the Novo Nordisk Network The University of Toronto’s Novo Nordisk Network for Healthy Populations is a new cross-disciplinary research network aimed at reducing the burden of diabetes and related chronic conditions. In partnership with the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, Dalla Lana School of Public Health, and the University of Toronto Mississauga, the goal is to establish an integrated platform of community-based research to address root causes of the diabetes epidemic in Mississauga, Peel Region and beyond. The Network will foster innovation and build capacity by leveraging the three University partners’ wealth of academic strengths and cutting-edge methods, and by catalyzing the creation of important links across fields to integrate diverse mindsets and approaches. Through reciprocal partnerships with community stakeholders, the Network will support the co-design and evaluation of locally relevant solutions that can be applied to a broad range of contexts. Using an integrated approach that targets health disparities across settings of healthcare, communities, and living environments, the Network will advance knowledge on how to make populations healthier in a feasible, effective, sustainable, and equitable way. Candidates must have earned a PhD degree in geography or a related discipline by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. The successful candidate must have a background and expertise in the area of health geography and environmental and social determinants of human health. The successful candidate will be expected to actively pursue innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to work on building and leading an internationally renowned, competitive, and externally funded research program in the areas of social and environmental determinants of health. We are seeking candidates who are interested in leading a research program focused on high-impact, innovative research that addresses key longstanding and emergent issues in health equity, population health, and chronic disease prevention. Their research into the impact of social, environmental and/or political determinants of human health and risk of chronic disease may focus on factors such as social inequities, housing and/or other elements of the built environment, pollutants and/or human interference in the environment, health policies, or immigration. The McGill School of Continuing Studies (SCS) invites applications for a full-time Assistant Professor (CAS) position in Multilingual Digital Communication. This is a full-time ranked academic, non-tenure-track position with an initial appointment of three (3) years with the possibility of renewal subject to performance. The successful candidate will collaborate with an interdisciplinary team of experts to build, develop, teach in, and make other contributions (e.g., incubating new initiatives such as applied research projects or other entrepreneurial ventures) to the School’s new Master’s in Multilingual Digital Communication, a cutting-edge program and the first of its kind in Canada that sits at the crossroads of the communication, language (translation), and tech industries. The McGill School of Continuing Studies The School of Continuing Studies is one of 11 faculties at McGill University, a public institution of advanced learning situated in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The School serves a diverse adult learner population of 8- 10,000+ annually, from pre-collegiate to post-retirement age. Leveraging both face-to-face and online delivery formats, the School offers a combined total of 60+ credit and non-credit programs and courses of varying duration at undergraduate, graduate, and professional levels. Particular emphasis is placed on serving the learning needs of Indigenous peoples and other equity-seeking groups as well as global communities and nontraditional adult learners. SCS’s pedagogic approach centers on highest quality, interactive, experiential and peer learning combined with close collaboration with practitioners, employers, and professional organizations. A bridge between the University and the local community in and around Montreal, as well as other regions of Quebec, SCS operates in a predominantly bilingual (French and English) but multicultural environment. Through strategic partnerships with institutions in other parts of Canada and across the globe, SCS enjoys a vibrant mix of domestic and international students seeking the knowledge and skills to launch, advance, or change their careers. Position Description: The successful candidate’s primary responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Develop and teach courses in the program or engage in the equivalent in special projects or applied research projects, as determined in consultation with the Graduate Program Director and the Directors of the Technology and Innovation and/or Global and Strategic Communication academic domains;
  • Participate in the development, assessment, and continuous improvement of the curriculum and teaching materials targeting early-/midcareer professionals;
  • Work with the GPD on the planning and coordination of the Multilingual Communication Technologies Stream, including the three-track capstone experience (internship/practicum/applied research project), and assist with other related academic administrative activities as needed;
  • Serve on the relevant workgroups or committees.
  • Conduct applied research that contributes to the program and its incubator role;
  • Identify and apply for grants and other sources of funding.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduate degree (Ph.D. preferred) in Localization Studies, Computational Linguistics, or any other relevant discipline(s)
  • Expertise in one or more of the following areas: Multilingual Communication Technologies, Multilingual AI, Machine Learning in Translation, Multilingual AI and Organizing, Computational Intelligence Applied to the Language Industry, Localization Engineering, Translation/Localization Management, UX Localization.
  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience with course/program development and delivery, preferably at the post-secondary level
  • Significant current and relevant industry experience in the relevant field of expertise
  • Active applied research agenda in one or more fields related to multilingual digital communication
  • Knowledge of French and English. McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing . Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and, at least, one other language.
  • Experience in fostering learning by establishing an inclusive and positive classroom dynamic, involving learners in various activities, and managing student participation and group interactions effectively
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Experience in and demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives, including accessibility in the context of online environments

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS AND ATTRIBUTES

  • Preference will be given to candidates with an interdisciplinary profile and experience teaching and conducting research with interdisciplinary teams
  • Knowledge of Indigenous languages is highly desirable
  • Knowledge of East Asian languages is highly desirable
  • Prior experience teaching or training adult learners is a plus

Position Details This is a full-time ranked academic, non-tenure track position for an initial period of three (3) years, from July 1, 2024 to July 31, 2027, with the possibility of renewal, subject to performance. Ranked CAS who have been continuously employed in the same Faculty for six (6) years shall be appointed for an Indefinite Term.
