Offer Description
The Institute of Measurement Science at the Slovak Academy of Sciences is looking for enthusiastic young researchers in the field of applied mathematics, specifically focusing on the analysis of causal relationships in measured signals and complex time series.
As successful candidates, you’ll be part of the Department of Theoretical Methods. Your main responsibilities will involve conducting independent research in applied mathematics, particularly in the area of causal analysis. This research will build upon extensions of Granger causality tests, tests involving reconstructed state spaces, and techniques rooted in information theory. These methods are not only useful for detecting causality in pairs of variables but also in cases involving multiple variables, which can be viewed as dynamic networks with nodes characterized by time series data. Such complex networks are widespread in the real world, and there is ongoing work to develop effective methods for their causal analysis. Currently, our focus is primarily on methods related to evaluating complexity measures, like fractal dimensions and Rényi generalized entropies. The ultimate goal of this research is to improve our ability to detect causality from time series data, which could become a powerful tool for classifying various types of data.
This opportunity allows for the creation of new approaches and the potential testing of these approaches on real-world measurements, such as EEG and ECG signals, climate data, and more. This position is suitable for potential PhD students and young post-doctoral researchers interested in creatively applying and advancing relevant mathematical methods. Machine learning methods may also come into play.
To excel in this role, you should have strong English skills and experience in developing and testing software within the MATLAB environment. As part of your work, you will expand your knowledge in the field of dynamical systems theory, including chaos and fractal theory, and gain insights into statistics, information theory, and mathematical optimization.
The Institute of Measurement Science at the Slovak Academy of Sciences offers a dynamic and modern research environment where you can develop valuable skills for your academic and professional journey.
