The Department of Philosophy at the University of Nottingham is looking to appoint an Assistant Professor (equivalent to a permanent Lecturer).

The purpose of this role will be to lead and deliver individual and/or collaborative research and teaching in the Department of Philosophy, and to take on appropriate administrative duties.

We welcome applications from those with demonstrable research and teaching excellence, particularly with teaching experience in History and Philosophy of science.

We want to continue to tackle the issues faced by underrepresented groups in philosophy – whether in staffing, curriculum, teaching, research, the public face of the disciplines, or in other ways, and so, you will be able to demonstrate an ability to make a positive difference to issues of underrepresentation, through your experience, work, ethos, identity, or in some other way.

We believe in an inclusive working environment for all, and so, we are welcoming, supportive, and caring, and pride ourselves on our positive community. Diversity is vital to our success and fundamental to our values. We want to raise our performance in producing world-class work in philosophy for a diverse audience of students and scholars. We are, therefore, particularly keen to receive applications from people who are currently underrepresented in Philosophy, such as those of underrepresented genders (e.g., women, non-binary, trans) and people from Black, Asian or minority ethnic backgrounds.

You will contribute to an exceptional education for undergraduates and postgraduates in the departments and make an exceptional contribution to the Philosophy Department’s research profile and culture. You will be keen to pursue opportunities for impact, public engagement, and interdisciplinarity. You will contribute to administration and be keen on championing and promoting Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion initiatives.

Shortlisting is anonymous: we cannot see any personal data or the ‘Additional Information’ section in your application until shortlisting is completed. Shortlisting is by criteria-based questions based on the person specification, rather than CV or letter. For this reason, we advise applicants to begin the application process as early as possible, so that you are aware of what we require.

This is a fixed-term, full-time (36.25 hours per week) post until 31 August 2024. Job share arrangements may be considered.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Dr Harold Noonan, Head of Department, email: harold.noonan@nottingham.ac.uk; please note that applications sent directly to this email addresses will not be accepted.

Requests for secondment from internal candidates may be considered on the basis that prior agreement has been sought from both your current line manager and the manager of your substantive post, if you are already undertaking a secondment role.
