NIHR GOSH BRC 3-year Clinical Training (PhD) Fellowship

An exciting clinical PhD opportunity at the NIHR Great Ormond Street Hospital Biomedical Research Centre (NIHR GOSH BRC) is open for applications. The NIHR GOSH BRC Clinical Training PhD Fellowship Programme aims to support training and development of the next generation of paediatric translational researchers. The Fellowship offers full-time salary funding for fellows to undertake a three-year PhD at the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health (UCL GOS ICH).

The call is open nationally with applications welcome from clinicians and wider health care professionals, including nurses, allied health professional (AHP) staff, pharmacists, psychologists and health care scientists interested in undertaking a PhD at UCL GOS ICH. Applicants are expected to develop a project proposal as part of their application which aligns with one (or more) of the BRC themes:

• Genomic medicine
• Tissue engineering and regenerative medicine
• Gene, stem and cellular therapies
• Accelerating novel therapies
• Applied child health and informatics

The NIHR Great Ormond Street Hospital Biomedical Research Centre (NIHR GOSH BRC) is a collaboration between Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) and the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health (ICH). The NIHR GOSH BRC provides cutting-edge facilities and world-leading expertise and access to over 200 rare disease patient populations allowing our staff and NHS, university and industry collaborators to conduct pioneering translational research into childhood illnesses.

The NIHR GOSH BRC anticipates funding up to four clinical PhD fellowships as part of this programme. The BRC Clinical Fellowship will provide:

• Full time salary commensurate with your stage of training for clinicians – this is up to but not including NHS consultant level. For wider health care professionals, you will receive a salary equivalent to your current NHS band. This will enable fellows protected time to concentrate on research, training and development
• The cost of tuition fees based on the UK (Home) rate PhD tuition fees for three years full time.
• Up to £5,000 non-pay budget per year to support research activities.
• Access to a training package of transferable skills for researchers and the opportunity to apply for additional consumable funding and an annual PhD prize.

Applicants will need to contact relevant supervisors at GOSH/ICH before applying and the BRC team can facilitate the initial meeting with the supervisor(s)if requested. Prospective supervisors will need to read the guidance and application form in full as well to check they meet the relevant eligibility criteria. Projects may also be collaborative and involve a supervisor and research time within the BRC’s Paediatric Excellence Initiative (Birmingham, Sheffield and Alder Hey Children’s Hospitals).
