The Department of microbiology, infectious diseases and immunology of the Faculty of Medicine of the Université de Montréal (UdeM) is looking for an Assistant or Associate full-time professor in the field of bacteriology. The successful candidate will develop an original, externally-funded, independent and highly competitive research program on the UdeM campus. Research topics can include, but are not limited to, antibiotic resistance, bacteria-phage interactions, bacterial physiology and metabolism, stress response, or cell biology. The Department of microbiology, infectious diseases and immunology includes 15 regular professors and over 30 clinical or adjunct professors working on the UdeM campus or at one of the affiliated research centers and institutes (CHUM, IRIC, IRCM, etc). The department has a strong research focus on fundamental and applied bacteriology, with 7 faculty members working on antibiotic discovery, antimicrobial resistance, pathogenesis, morphogenesis, bacteria-phage interactions, biofilm formation, DNA replication, genome plasticity, and other topics on campus, using approaches from genetics, cell biology, biochemistry, biophysics, microscopy to genomics. The Department of microbiology, infectious diseases and immunology is part of the Center for Biomedical Innovation (CIB), which brings together more than 50 researchers from the five basic science departments of the Faculty of Medicine on the main campus. This new center covers a wide range of research fields, including structural and quantitative biology, host- pathogen-environment interactions, and cellular and systems neuroscience. CIB and its affiliated research centers provide exceptional support through their scientific platforms maintained by highly qualified research personnel.

As a professor, you will have the opportunity to contribute to the excellence of your Faculty of Medicine, Center for Biomedical Innovation and the Department Microbiology, Infectious diseases & Immunology of the Faculty of Medicine…

…through your teaching and your research activities. You will also ensure the visibility of your discipline in addition to actively participate in the operation of a renowned institution. As such, you will:

  • Develop an independent, innovative and international-calibre research program in bacteriology;
  • Supervise undergraduate and graduate students as well as postdocs;
  • Actively participate in undergraduate and graduate teaching in the field of microbiology
  • Ensure the visibility of your discipline in addition to actively participate in the operation of a renowned institution.

To succeed in this role, you’ll need:

  • Have a doctoral degree in microbiology or a related discipline and have significant experience as a post- doctoral fellow in the field of bacteriology, including in research topics mentioned above;
  • Having undergraduate and graduate teaching experience would be an asset;
  • Have demonstrated excellent research productivity;
  • Demonstrate interest and ability to work within a multidisciplinary team (e.g. cellular biology, biochemists, chemists, bioinformaticians);
  • An adequate knowledge of the French written and spoken language or a strong commitment to mastering the proficiency level required, in accordance to Université de Montréal’s Language Policy. An institutional learning support program is offered to all professors wishing to learn French or improve their communication skills.
