The Canola Breeding and research program in the Department of Agricultural, Food and Nutritional Science, University of Alberta, is currently seeking a self-motivated individual to fill ONE (1) Student Summer Research Assistant position.
This temporary full-time summer position has an expected start date of May 01, 2020 – August 31, 2020 with the possibility of extension till October 31, 2020
The summer student will be expected to travel to South campus as well as our St. Albert Research Station.
Preferences will be given to those students enrolled in Agricultural Programs. Must have a valid class 5 drivers licence with a clean driver abstract.
Weekend and evening work is expected during harvesting time.
Duties
- Seed preparation for establishing field trials (weighing sub-samples and treating with Helix)
- Seed canola field experiments by both hand and seeders pulled by a tractor
- Control weeds by hand and using tractor-mounted implements (rotary-cultivator and boom sprayer)
- Self-pollinate canola field experiments using self-pollination bags and tents
- Harvest field canola experiments by hand and combine
- Help graduate students with their canola greenhouse and field experiments
Qualifications
- Preferences will be given to current students enrolled in plant, environmental and biological science programs
- Demonstrate ability to work effectively in a fast-paced team environment
- Demonstrate excellent problem-solving skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Must work well in a team environment
- Must have a valid class 5 (No GDL) drivers licence with a clean driving record
