Church-theological scholarships

The scholarship department supports study, research and language stays as well as doctorates in theology and church-related subjects. The scholarships are aimed at employees from Protestant and Orthodox churches and serve as a means of getting to know each other, global ecumenical networking and qualification. Bread for the World and the German National Committee of the Lutheran World Federation are responsible for the church-theological programs.

Scholarships for theologians from abroad

Theology students and graduates from:

  • Protestant and Orthodox member churches of the World Council of Churches for a study visit to Germany, 
  • Member churches of the Lutheran World Federation for a study visit to Germany
  • Member churches of the Lutheran World Federation for ecumenical studies in Rome / Italy or Sibiu / Romania

Important application requirements:

  • Academic qualification: at least the intermediate examination theology / bachelor’s degree or equivalent
  • German language skills at least B1 level when applying, at least B2 level when starting studies
  • Church recommendation of the church leadership and academic expert opinion
  • At the time of application, applicants may not live in Germany for more than 15 months
  • Willingness to return to the home country after completing the scholarship
  • Applicants must not be over 35 years of age

The application deadline is January 1st of each year, studies usually begin in the following winter semester.

The scholarship programs are financed by means from Churches Help Churches, the German National Committee of the Lutheran World Federation (DNK / LWB) and regional church grants.

Scholarships for theologians from Germany

Theology students and graduates from:

  • Reformed or United German regional churches for a study visit abroad
  • Lutheran German regional churches for a study visit abroad

Important application requirements:

  • Academic qualification: At least intermediate examination theology / Bachelor or equivalent
  • Church recommendation of the church leadership and academic expert opinion
  • Proven knowledge of the language of the host country
  • Applicants must not be over 35 years of age

Application deadline:

  • January 1st of each year for starting studies in the coming winter semester
  • July 1st of each year for starting studies in the coming summer semester

The scholarship programs are financed by funds from the DNK / LWB as well as by regional church grants.

Scholarships for students of church-related subjects

Studies in Germany of religious and civil society relevance are funded. The program serves to train employees of Protestant and Orthodox churches, church-related organizations and partner organizations of Bread for the World, mainly from Eastern Europe.

Important application requirements:

  • Academic qualification: At least Bachelor or equivalent
  • German language skills at least B1 level when applying, at least B2 level when starting studies
  • Church and academic recommendations
  • Voluntary work in church and / or civil society
  • At the time of application, applicants may not live in Germany for more than 15 months
  • Willingness to return to the home country after completing the scholarship
  • Applicants must not be over 35 years of age

Application deadline:

  • January 1st of each year for starting studies in the coming winter semester
  • July 1st of each year for starting studies in the coming summer semester

This scholarship program is financed by the Federal Foreign Office of the Federal Republic of Germany.


Theological PhD scholarships

Doctorates in Germany in theology and diaconal studies are funded. The program is aimed at international applicants from Protestant and Orthodox member churches of the World Council of Churches and member churches of the Lutheran World Federation. The award takes place at the request of partner churches, theological faculties or partner organizations of Bread for the World.

Important application requirements:

  • Eligibility for doctoral studies at a German university
  • Nomination by a partner church, theological faculty or partner organization of Bread for the World
  • Willingness to return to the nominating institution upon completion of the fellowship
  • Knowledge of German at least at B1 level
  • Applicants must not be over 35 years of age
  • There are no family grants

Application deadline:

  • January 1st of each year for starting studies in the coming winter semester
  • July 1st of each year for starting studies in the coming summer semester

German intensive course in Sibiu / Romania

An intensive German course is offered annually at the Department of Protestant Theology at the University of Lucian Blaga in Sibiu / Romania. The course concludes with the B1 exam at the Goethe Institute in Bucharest. Bread for the World awards 15 scholarships for this purpose. A university degree is required. The target group are people who are involved in the church, especially theologians. Successful completion of the course offers the opportunity to apply for a scholarship in Germany.
