The University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, Institute of Ethnomusicology, is offering a position beginning with the winter semester 2021/22 for a
University Professorship for Ethnomusicology
based on § 98 of the Universities Act and § 25 of the collective agreement for university employees, in the form of a full-time contractual position. It is possible to agree to an overpayment of the minimum monthly salary, which has been determined by the collective agreement and which at present is 5,130.20 € gross (14 payments annually).
The Institute of Ethnomusicology at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz is characterised by a cooperative interaction of research approaches and various regional focuses. Students focusing on Ethnomusicology in the field of Musicology benefit from the existing diversity, as do the employees who cooperate on this basis in teaching and research.
For the position as a university professor at the Institute of Ethnomusicology we are looking for a personality who contributes to the existing variety of research approaches at the institute and enriches it with his/her own focuses. His/her tasks also include supporting the established internal university collaborations as well as the local and international ones and developing them.
Applicants are expected to have extensive knowledge of current methods and research trends in Ethnomusicology and proficiency in field research with at least one regional focus. Applicants should also have experience in the conception and management of research projects, in the acquisition of third-party funds as well as in staff management and teamwork.
At the institute, students are given the opportunity to gain practical experience with various musics in several ensembles. It is therefore of an advantage if applicants can contribute practical musical skills, for example from their regional research focus.
Task areas
- independent research activity in the field of Ethnomusicology
- conception, acquisition and management of third-party funded projects
- independent teaching and examination work, especially with focus on Ethnomusicology in the field of Musicology
- supervision of theses on Bachelor, Master and PhD level
- active participation in the further development of the university’s teaching environment and its artistic and scholarly life, as well as participating in the academic self-governance of the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz
- participation in organisational, administrative and evaluation duties
I. Basic Employment Requirements
- a degree at the doctoral level from an Austrian or comparable foreign educational institute relevant to the position
- Habilitation and/or a qualification equal to the Habilitation in the subject area to be filled
- gender competence and diversity competence
II. Specific Employment Requirements
- an outstanding international scholarly reputation
- extensive international publication activity in the field of Ethnomusicology
- pedagogical and didactic aptitude for university teaching at an excellent level
- experience in conception, acquisition and management of externally funded research projects
- extensive experience with ethnographic research methods (field research)
- ability and willingness to work in a team and to take on academic management functions
- ability to teach in the field of practical music
- language skills: in order to be able to represent the subject internationally, excellent written and spoken English skills are required. If knowledge of German is not available, the willingness to learn the German language, e.g. with regard to an active participation in university committees, is required. Basic knowledge of German at the time of employment is beneficial.
