JOB DESCRIPTION

Hogeschool Utrecht is looking for a Knowledge Center for Learning and Innovation

Lecturer Mathematical and analytical skills of professionals

About the Knowledge Center Learning and Innovation

The Professorship of Mathematical and Analytical Ability of Professionals is part of the Knowledge Center for Learning and Innovation (KC LENI).

KC LENI
The Knowledge Center for Learning and Innovation (LENI) focuses on the broad issue of generic competencies that professionals need as part of (working together) and thus living together (now and in the future). What is the content of these competences, how can professionals develop, learn and practice them, which everyday, organized or casual contexts help with this and which tools and methods can support this process? And how does education help with this? Education in the broadest sense of the word, from primary education to higher vocational education and from institutionalized learning practices in schools to organized learning practices at work.

Social developments
The professorship Mathematical and Analytical Capacity of Professionals ties in with developments at three levels: society, the university of applied sciences and the knowledge center. At the social level, the dynamics and complexity of professional practices in today’s high-tech society increasingly demand arithmetic and language skills. Both professionals and citizens are faced with an increasing flow of quantitative and statistical information that one must be able to interpret in order to make decisions regarding professional actions. Technological applications play an increasingly important role in these information flows and commercial practices. More than in the past, thinking skills are needed to deal with such systems in an informed way. The ability to understand the quantitative and multidimensional side of the world around us is an important competence. The question from society is therefore how these competences can be developed and maintained in continuous lifelong learning lines, and how pupils, students and professionals can be equipped to deal adequately and autonomously with the contemporary complexity and dynamics in study, work and daily life. life.

Mathematical and analytical skills within the degree programs
In many HU degree programs – but also in vocational education and professional practices in the broad sense – people struggle with the question of which mathematical skills (prospective) professionals are required to function in future professional practice, which is dynamic and in which ICT resources are playing an increasingly important role. It is not uncommon for mathematics to be a stumbling block to improve student success, and to develop a lifelong learning offering that suits professional practice, knowledge of the necessary mathematical competences and the way in which they are acquired is essential.

Connection to the knowledge center
At the level of the Knowledge Center for Learning and Innovation, it is important to include specific competence professors in addition to education-oriented professorships. The transcending themes of the former can be reinforced by domain-based research groups, and vice versa. Given the importance of mathematical competences (including numeracy, statistical literacy and mathematical skills) and the great difficulties that citizens and professionals experience with this, a mathematical-oriented competency research group should not be missing in addition to the new language-oriented research group. The internal, regional, national and international demand for the Knowledge Center to contribute to curriculum development and educational innovation in arithmetic, statistics,

Focus and research question
The central research question is therefore; What mathematical and analytical competences do professionals need to adequately deal with quantitative and multidimensional issues in their complex professional practice, what is the nature and form of these competences, and how can they be acquired and maintained?
