Two PhD positions available in the field of Organic Materials and London Dispersion Interactions

Cotutelle PhD Award between Macquarie University (Australia) and Justus-Liebig-Universität Giessen (Germany)

The Cotutelle PhD Award programme offers candidates the opportunity to undertake a PhD with a strong supervisory team both in Giessen and in Sydney. The co-tutelle PhD candidates will be registered at both Macquarie University and Justus-Liebig-Universität Giessen and must complete all of the requirements of the PhD programme in both the home and partner university. The candidates are expected to spend an equal amount of time at the two institutions.

A jointly awarded PhD studentship from Macquarie University and Justus-Liebig-Universität Giessen is available for two outstanding and ambitious chemist to undertake research in the field of organic materials and London interactions. As part of a multidisciplinary team, the successful candidates will spend time performing research in the laboratory of Prof Peter R. Schreiner in Giessen and A/Prof Koushik Venkatesan and Prof Alison Rodger in Sydney. The student will learn new synthetic techniques, computational techniques, optical and vibrational spectroscopy.

Academic background of candidates:

A Master’s degree and a first-class or equivalent grade in Chemistry are generally required. Candidates should have solid knowledge and practical experience in organic/organometallic chemistry and be well versed with techniques such as working under inert atmosphere, NMR, UV-Vis absorbance, IR, MS etc. The candidate should be highly motivated, have good command of English (oral and written), and be rigorous and eager to learn. Applicants are recommended to provide results of the IELTS, TOEFL and/or GRE tests, or other measure(s) of English proficiency.

Funding

Funding for the programme will cover tuition fees and an annual stipend. You will spend 18 months at each institution and will receive a dual PhD at the end of the three year programme.
