Job Summary
The Hein Research Laboratory at the University of British Columbia, supported by the Acceleration Consortium (AC) and the Apogee Canada Research Excellence Fund (FAPC), is seeking a research associate to lead software development and the implementation of robotic and automated workflows to optimize chemical reactions. This role involves creating Python scripts for automating experiments and supervising student researchers.
Responsibilities

Define and manage research project objectives, milestones, and timelines.

Collaborate with other researchers and staff, both internal and within the AC network.

Supervise graduate and undergraduate students in their research work.

Create and modify Python scripts for automating laboratory instruments.

Contribute to high-quality outcomes, including publications, conference presentations, funding applications, and reports.
Qualifications

PhD in Chemistry with a minimum of three years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Demonstrated experience in laboratory automation and software orchestration.

Ability to work independently, demonstrate sound judgment, and analyze problems to propose solutions.
Organizational Status
The research associate will report to Dr. Jason Hein, Professor in the Department of Chemistry at UBC. The nature of the interdisciplinary research conducted at the Hein Laboratory requires close collaboration and effective teamwork.
Supervision

Supervise graduate and undergraduate students on research tasks and deliverables.

Work independently under the general direction of the principal investigator.
Start Date and Contract Duration
The position is expected to begin on May 1, 2025, or a mutually agreed-upon date, with an initial two-year contract, renewable.
