We are looking for doctoral researchers to join the Faculty of Education and Culture at Tampere University for fixed-term positions up to 4 years starting on 1 October 2023 or 1 January 2024. The applicants must already have the right to pursue a doctoral degree in the Faculty of Education and Culture. Please note that there is no possibility to apply for a new right before this call ends.

Job description

The goal of a position of doctoral researcher is to complete a doctoral degree in the Doctoral Programme of Education and Society at Tampere University.

Besides conducting research for the dissertation, the position may include teaching or other duties in the faculty related to the studies. These duties may not exceed 5 % of the overall working hours. Doctoral researchers are encouraged to interact in a reciprocally supportive way to facilitate knowledge construction and collegial relations beyond one’s own research group and dissertation topic.

Qualification requirements:

  • applicable Master’s degree
  • right to pursue a doctoral degree in the Doctoral Programme of Education and Society (please note that there is no possibility to apply for a new right before this call ends)
  • approved study plan (see details below)
  • research plan approved by the supervisor (see details below)
  • ability and motivation to work towards and complete a doctoral degree, as demonstrated during prior studies towards a degree or otherwise

The positions will be filled for a fixed-term period of up to four years starting on 1 October 2023 or 1 January 2024. The exact length of the contract will depend on the current stage of your studies and your expected graduation date.

The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities. According to the criteria applied to teaching and research staff, the position of a doctoral researcher is placed on level 2-4 of the job requirements scale. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.

How to apply

Submit your application through our online recruitment system (link below). The closing date for applications is 28 June 2023 at 23:59 EEST / UTC+3. The application is written in English, with the exception of the research plan, which may be written in Finnish, if Finnish is the only language of the prospective dissertation. If the language of the prospective dissertation is only partly Finnish or if the language of the dissertation is only English, the entire application, including the research plan must be in English.

The following documents are required as attachments to the application in PDF format.

  • Curriculum Vitae, prepared according to the guidelines issued by the Finnish Advisory Board on Research Integrity (TENK) including contact information for two referees
  • A research plan and a statement of purpose (combined maximum length of these two documents is 2500 words, including the words in tables and figures, excluding the maximum-two-page list of references)
    The research plan must be written using the following format:
    – Title
    – The name of the sub-area of specialization of the doctoral thesis plan within educational sciences
    – An introduction to the scientific and societal relevance of the doctoral thesis plan
    – A discussion of the most relevant academic literature
    – Key research questions stemming from the literature discussion
    – Methodological framework, data collection and ethics
    – Scientific contribution to the area of specialization
    – References (not included in the total word count of 2500 words, but not exceeding two pages)
    – A statement by the applicant confirming that the research plan is approved by the supervisors, e.g. “I have discussed this research plan with my supervisors X and Y, who have approved it.”
    The statement of purpose must describe succinctly:
    – The applicant’s aptitude and motivation to pursue the specific area of specialization within educational sciences and the applicant’s future career goals
    – What makes the applicant ready to engage with this area of specialization
    – A brief summary or updates of the applicant’s study plan. The full study plan is attached to the proposal as a separate document (see details below)
    – The current funding situation and the time needed to complete the PhD in the position of a doctoral researcher.
  • A study plan
    – The latest approved study plan. Applicants who obtained the study right in June 2023 attach the study plan from the study right application and applicants who obtained the study rights prior to June 2023 attach the latest approved study plan.
