HELIOS is an international graduate school run by DESY, the University of Hamburg and Lund University. The school brings together expertise from different physics disciplines to prepare young scientists from diverse backgrounds for the challenges that come with next-generation instruments and data acquisition.
We are looking for talented PhD candidates, with a strong interest in instrumentation development and control.
About your role:
HELIOS currently has 5 open PhD positions located at DESY in Hamburg in the fields of
- Nano- and Nano-bio Science
- Particle Physics
- Ultrafast Photon Science

DESY in Hamburg does not grant doctoral degrees directly but collaborates with the University of Lund and the University of Hamburg. Candidates for thesis research will have to satisfy the terms of admission for doctoral theses of the University of Lund and Hamburg. PhD students receive a monthly salary of 67% of the payment of the remuneration group 13 TVöD (Federal Government).
