Department: Department of Geography, Geomatics and Environment
Campus: University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM)
Description:
The Department of Geography, Geomatics and Environment at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) invites applications for one full-time tenure stream appointment in the area of Environmental Resources Policy and Stewardship. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor and will begin on July 1, 2022, or shortly thereafter.
Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. degree in geography, environmental studies, Indigenous studies, environmental policy, or a related field, by the time of appointment or shortly thereafter, and have a record of excellence in research and teaching. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and deepen our existing departmental strengths (http://www.utm.utoronto.ca/geography/research-clusters). We especially welcome candidates whose research agenda investigates critical and creative Indigenous approaches to natural resource policy, Indigenous legal orders and governance, and/or environmental stewardship and sustainability. The successful applicant will be expected to develop and maintain an innovative, independent, competitive, and externally funded program of research. The successful applicant will teach undergraduate courses in the Environment programs in the Department of Geography, Geomatics and Environment at UTM, and will also become a full member of the Graduate Department of Geography and Planning at the University of Toronto, undertaking graduate teaching and supervision. For further information on the UTM Department and on the tri-campus Graduate Department, see https://www.utm.utoronto.ca/geography/ and https://geography.utoronto.ca/graduate-geography/.
Evidence of excellence in research can be demonstrated through publications (accepted or published) in top-ranked and field-relevant academic journals; presentations at significant conferences; research grants and awards; other examples of scholarly output, knowledge dissemination, and creative work; and strong endorsements by referees of high standing.
Evidence of excellence in teaching will be demonstrated through a teaching dossier and teaching accomplishments, as well as strong letters of reference. The dossier must include a statement of teaching philosophy, teaching evaluations, sample course materials, or evidence of superior performance and/or innovation in teaching-related activities. This evidence may include awards, grants, performance as a teaching assistant or course instructor, experience leading successful workshops or seminars, student mentorship, or excellent conference presentations or posters.
At UTM we are committed to fostering an environment of diversity and inclusion. With an enviable diverse student body, we especially welcome applications from candidates who identify as Indigenous, Black, or racially visible (persons of colour), and who have experience working with teaching or mentoring diverse groups or students. Candidates must demonstrate, in their application materials, an ability to foster diversity on campus and within the curriculum or discipline, and must show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial environment. Candidates must submit a statement describing their contributions to equity, diversity, and inclusion, which might cover topics such as (but not limited to): teaching that incorporates a focus on underrepresented communities; efforts undertaken to develop inclusive pedagogies, collaboration, and engagement with underrepresented communities; and mentoring of students from underrepresented groups. If you have questions about this statement, please contact Yuhong He, chair.utm.geography@utoronto.ca.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
All qualified candidates are invited to apply online by clicking the link below. Applications must include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, two examples of scholarly output, a teaching dossier (as outlined above), a statement outlining current and future research interests, and a diversity statement as it relates to research, teaching, and service (as noted above).
Applicants must provide the names and contact information of three referees. We welcome, if relevant, a letter that comments on the applicant’s Indigenous community engagement. The University of Toronto’s recruiting tool will automatically solicit and collect letters of reference from each once an application is submitted (this happens overnight). Applicants, however, remain responsible for ensuring that referees submit letters (on letterhead, dated and signed), and that the letters are submitted by the referees by the closing date.
All application materials must be submitted online. Submission guidelines can be found at: http://uoft.me/how-to-apply. Your CV and cover letter should be uploaded into the dedicated fields. Please combine additional application materials into one or two files in PDF/MS Word format. If you have any questions about this position, please contact the search committee chair, Professor Yuhong He, at chair.utm.geography@utoronto.ca.
All application materials, including reference letters, must be received by Thursday, October 21, 2021.
All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.
