Research field and overview

RIKEN’s research is based on synthesis and interdisciplinarity, and with free thinking as its basic philosophy, RIKEN promotes research that goes beyond the boundaries of conventional research fields, while at the same time responding to the needs of society from a strategic perspective. RIKEN invites applications for the position of Laboratory Head (indefinite-term employment position) to serve in a leadership position in the following research area. The successful candidate will be responsible for directing research projects from a mid-to-long-term perspective.

Field: Adult dynamic homeostasis

Basic research related to adult dynamic homeostasis. Topics of keen interest include studies that lead to ground breaking findings on the life-long regulation of the maintenance, aging, deterioration, and inheritance of biosystems throughout the life cycle from the birth to death or to the next generations. We encourage proposals that include focuses on undifferentiated or multipotent stem cells in adults, or any pioneering researches that aim to contribute to the understanding of biological processes in the adult stages of the life cycle. Successful proposals are expected to promote and take advantage of the interdisciplinary approaches within the RIKEN Center for Biosystems Dynamics Research (BDR) as well as all of RIKEN.

The RIKEN BDR aims to understand the general principles of organismal temporal dynamics throughout the lifespan from birth to death, including aging. Our interdisciplinary approaches include imaging, multi-omics, theory, molecular biology, structural biology, stem cell biology, organoids, and diverse animal models. BDR provides Laboratory heads with an excellent environment for their independent research, including internationally competitive start-up packages and annual research funds. Laboratory heads will have access to cutting-edge facilities including various animal models, mouse genome engineering, omics, and multi-scale imaging including light microscopy and cryoEM, and to opportunities for active collaborations with medical institutions, industry, and affiliated graduate schools.
