Umeå School of Architecture is a department at the Faculty of Science and Technology at Umeå University, it was founded in 2009, and is located at the Arts Campus. For Umeå School of Architecture holistic, interdisciplinary and experimental approaches are seen as crucial to address global challenges and opportunities in architecture such as climate change, increasing inequalities, environmental degradation, uneven geographical living conditions and migration. The lack of a long institutional history provides an open, curious and sensitive atmosphere that tends to reinforce such methods. We are now looking for lecturers in architecture with a specialisation towards socially sustainable development and urban transformation strategies, or other appropriate direction, full time. The last date to apply is 25th of February 2020.
Duties
The main tasks are education at the first and second cycle of the Architecture Programme and teaching within the research education in combination with research. You are expected to actively contribute to the work of building a productive and creative PhD education at the department, both through your own research and through active participation in planning and administration.
In addition to practical teaching and independent research, the position includes administration, planning, documentation and development regarding one’s own research and education, as well as tasks common for the department. The lecturer should contribute to subject development within architecture and his/her subject area through his/her own research. The lecturer should actively contribute to subject development and pedagogical development at Umeå School of Architecture. The lecturer shall work actively to follow developments in his/her own subject area in terms of education, research and architectural profession, as well as the social development in general which is important for the lecturer’s work at the University
Eligibility requirements
To be eligible for employment as a Associate Professor on scientific ground, according to The Higher Education Ordinance (Chapter 4, 4§), you must have demonstrated educational expertise and hold a doctorate or has attained equivalent academic competence or other professional skills relevant with regards to the subject area of the appointment.
A master degree in architecture, or equivalent, from a recognized university of architecture is a requirement.
Documented experience of teaching at both first and second cycle is a requirement, and the experience of teaching at postgraduate level is a requirement
Fluency in written and spoken English is required. You also need to have excellent communication skills and good ability to collaborate and communicate with students and colleagues to create a good learning environment
Assessment criteria and their weight
The grounds of assessment for the employment will first, and to an equal extent, be the level of pedagogical and scientific proficiency. Second, the level of administrative skill. In addition, other skills of importance should be taken into account with regard to the subject content of the employment and the tasks to be included in the employment.
Scientific proficiency shall cover one or more of the following subject areas: Architecture with a focus on socially sustainable development and/or urban transformation strategies. This concerns architecture and urban transformation strategies from a socially sustainable perspective, or other applicable area within the field of architecture. A master degree in architecture, or equivalent, from a recognized university of architecture is a requirement.
The level of scientific proficiency shall be assessed on the basis of scientific work published in internationally reputable scientific journals and at scientific conferences. Documented ability to compete for research funds from external contributors and clients is a merit. In addition, the ability to independently organize, develop and manage projects, as well as the ability to practice method development and to apply the methods on new issues will be considered. Documented ability to successfully collaborate with international researchers and researchers in other scientific disciplines is a merit.
Pedagogical proficiency shall cover the subject area of architecture with a focus on socially sustainable development and urban transformation strategies. This covers architecture and the application of urban transformation strategies from a socially sustainable perspective, or other applicable area within the field of architecture.
Administrative proficiency should include the ability to develop and lead activities and personnel at the department, but also within other relevant operations. Ability to create collaboration between undergraduate, advanced and postgraduate education and research in the subject area of the position, with other disciplines, with professional practitioners and with other actors in the field of architecture and in society is a requirement.
Fluency in written and spoken English is required. You also need to have excellent communication skills and good ability to collaborate and communicate with students and colleagues to create a good learning environment. You should be creative, have a strong sense of initiative, and be able to work independently.
