The position:  We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated candidate to start a PhD trajectory in liquid biopsy method development for improved cancer detection. The project has a strong focus on novel design and implementation of different IT tools and coordination of team members.  As such, you integrate different large scale and omic data sources. Project background:

  • Genomic medicine moves healthcare from being reactive to disease to being predictive to disease onset or from cure to prevention.
  • Next-generation sequencing technologies have leveraged novel concepts to diagnose, treat and monitor diseases.

Eligibility criteria
You ideally have:
  • Strong computational, programming and/or data analysis skills with an IT, BioIT or engineering background.
  • Experience with the development and validation of bioinformatic methods.
  • Knowledge of bioinformatic pipelines for the analysis of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) and other -omics data
  • Knowledge in several of the following programming languages: Python, R, bash, Perl.
  • Knowledge of several NGS and deployment platform-related software packages and technologies
  • Knowledge of programming standards, unit tests, and software development tools such as Visual Studio Code.
  • Experience in workflow managers (e.g. Nextflow).

Area of research: PHD Thesis Part-Time Suitability: The position is suitable for part-time employment. Job description:PhD position in "Seasonally resolved ecophysiology of Arctic phytoplankton assemblages under global warming" (m/f/d) Background The Arctic is warming more than twice as fast as the global average, which changes ecosystem phenology and productivity. Still, our understanding of Arctic ecological processes is based predominantly on studies conducted during spring and summer, so that many seasonal aspects (e.g. life-cycling, overwintering) and their sensitivity to global change are still poorly understood. The YESSS project aims at better understanding the responses of Arctic coastal ecosystems and their key species to warming, by means of weekly assessments of oceanographic and biological ‘core’ parameters. These in-situ observations are complemented with dedicated season-specific experiments on temperature responses of key species from multiple trophic levels (phytoplankton, seaweeds, mollusks, echinoderms and fish). This PhD project will investigate the interaction between environmental conditions and seasonal variations in key traits of Arctic natural phytoplankton assemblages. Further, seasonally-resolved experiments on the temperature sensitivity of phytoplankton in different successional and physiological stages (e.g. pre-bloom, spring bloom, post-bloom, overwintering) will be conducted to understand the effects of Arctic warming and to identify physiological bottlenecks and detect potential tipping points. Tasks
  • Join five >6 week-long expeditions to a coastal Arctic research station in a small team with a diverse range of tasks
  • Conduct weekly in-situ sampling from small boats in all seasons
  • Plan, conduct and analyze seasonally-resolved experiments on the thermal scope of Arctic natural phytoplankton assemblages
  • Perform physiological assays with natural phytoplankton assemblages to measure rates of important processes (e.g. primary production, respiration, grazing losses)
  • Work in a larger consortium to understand which seasons are most sensitive to climate change effects on Arctic coastal ecosystem functioning
  • Present your finding on international conference and publish in peer-reviewed journals
Requirements

Job description:The Helmholtz Centre Potsdam – GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences is the national centre for geosphere research. As a member of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres we are part of the largest scientific organization in Germany. With approximately 1,500 employees our key mission is to secure a profound understanding of the systems and processes of solid Earth, to develop strategies and options for action in addressing global change and its impacts on a regional level, to understand natural hazards and to minimize associated risks, to ensure the sustainable provision of energy and raw materials for a high-tech society and to evaluate the influence of human activity on system Earth.

In the context of the energy transition and the associated phase-out of coal and nuclear energy, a considerably more intensive use of the underground will be necessary, e.g. for energy storage, usage of deep geothermal systems, or the sequestration of CO2 into the subsurface. Another challenge in the future is the long-term safe storage of high-level nuclear waste into a deep geological repository. These future new and changed utilisation concepts place new demands on the integrity and long-term stability of georeservoirs both directly related to the stress state and its human-induced stress changes.

For section 2.6 Seismic Hazard and Risk Dynamics we are looking for a:

In this research project, we are offering a PhD position for an ambitious and motivated student to undertake forward 3‑D geomechanical-numerical modelling of the contemporary stress state of the subsurface on reservoir scale. In particular we focus on new concepts to calibrate models using data from borehole logs (FMI, UBI, caliper etc.) as well as Formation Integrity, Leak-Off and Micro-Hydraulic Fracture tests in an integrative way. In particular we would like to explore the minimum amount of data needed to receive a robust stress prediction for a safe usage of the subsurface. The candidate will be part of the joint project SpannEnD funded by the BGE (federal company for radioactive waste disposal). The partners of the project are the TU Darmstadt (Prof. Andreas Henk, Dr. Karsten Reiter) and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Prof. Frank Schilling, Dr. Birgit Müller).

Your responsibilities:

  • Application, analysis and further processing of different stress information data sets
  • Application and expansion of our modelling workflow that is based on the commercial software packages Hypermesh (discretization), Abaqus (Finite Element Solver), and Tecplot 360 EX (visualization).
  • Construction and simulation of generic models and a case study using a 3D model of a deep geological repository for high-level nuclear waste from our Swiss partner NAGRA
  • Method development for the extension and improvement of model calibration
  • Publication of research results in international journals and at conferences
  • Collaboration with national and international partners

Your qualifications:

  • Master`s degree (or equivalent) in geophysics, geology, geotechnics or physics
  • Affinity for modelling and use of numerical methods
  • Basic knowledge in statistics, script languages (Python, Matlab) and numerical tools is an advantage, but no requirement
  • Ability to work in a goal-oriented and structured manner
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills for working in an interdisciplinary environment

The Future-Generation of Resilient and Infrastructure Design Technology Hub (Future-GRID TecH) in the Division of Engineering at New York University Abu Dhabi, seeks to recruit two motivated Post-Doctoral Associates. The candidates will work under the supervision of Future-GRID TecH director Dr. Mohamed Moustafa to carry out cutting-edge research in the broad area of future structures and resilient infrastructure systems with interest in applications of new and emerging technologies. Particular areas of interest include:

  • advanced construction and reinforcement materials (e.g. UHPC, ECC, SMA)
  • UHPC mix development, material characterization, modeling, and structural design
  • structural 3D concrete printing
  • computational mechanics and structural topology optimization
  • vision-based structural health monitoring
  • autonomous and drone-based infrastructure inspection and vibration monitoring
  • performance-based wind engineering and wind tunnel testing
  • real-time hybrid simulation and cyber-physical systems and experimental methods

Successful candidates must hold a PhD degree in Civil/Structural Engineering, or related field such as Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Nuclear Engineering, and Material Science. Other required qualifications include: strong communication and presentation skills; a track record in writing and publishing peer-reviewed journal publications; and previous or relevant experience in mentoring or supervising undergraduate student research or junior graduate students.

A formal training, education, or certification in a secondary area (beyond the main PhD focus) such as machine learning, artificial intelligence, computer vision, robotics, UAVs, additive manufacturing, computational fluid dynamics, etc. is a plus. Other preferred qualifications include: expertise in programming and coding (preferably using Python and C ) and GUI development; expertise in computational mechanics and finite element simulation and modeling; expertise in laboratory and multi-scale experimental testing at the material, component, and structural levels.

The candidates will work in a multidisciplinary environment consisting of PhD-level scientists and undergraduate students, conduct high-quality “innovative and independent” experimental, analytical, and/or computational research, publish research work and results in scientific peer-reviewed journals and conferences, mentor undergraduate students, and participate in writing research grant proposals.

The Department of Sociology and Anthropology (SOAN) invites applications from qualified candidates for a SSHRC Tier II Canada Research Chair (CRC) appointment in Disability Justice.  The chair, whose appointment will be in sociology, will be at the rank of assistant professor or associate professor beginning July 1, 2024. Appointment is conditional on the approval of the application by the CRC Secretariat.

The ideal candidate will have a PhD with a focus on Disability Justice and a record of strong SSHRC funding. Disability justice centres the transformative role of disability politics, cultures, and communities to collectively dismantle ableism and build more accessible and socially just relations in the world. Emerging out of US activism done by disabled people of colour and disabled queer and trans people in the early 2000s, the unique knowledge produced by disability justice approaches is beneficial to disabled people, policymakers, not-for-profit sectors, social movements, and scholarly work in critical disability and social movement studies and beyond. Reconceptualizing disability as an intersecting social, cultural, and political phenomenon, the CRC in Disability Justice will engage with the ingenuity of Carleton’s emerging interdisciplinary network of critical disability studies scholars and accessibility experts, as well as draw on community partners, artists, and activists in the national capital region and beyond. Disability justice issues remain under-examined both locally, nationally, and internationally.  To redress this, the Chair will build on Carleton’s excellent research reputation as a leader in accessibility and critical disability studies to expand its internationally competitive research program to include disability justice social movements, cultures, scholarship, and activism. Potential research areas include a wide range of methodological, theoretical, and community based approaches taking up abolition, transinstitutionalization, and carceral ableism; crip theory; mad studies; decolonial, post-colonial, and transnational disability studies; fat studies; feminist and intersectional theory; bio/necro politics; political economy of disability, health and wellness; medicalization and the politics of diagnosis, treatment, and cure; national and global health inequities; disability futures; disability cultures; and Medical Assistance in Dying.

About the Academic Unit

The Department of Sociology and Anthropology (https://carleton.ca/socanth/) is one of the oldest and most highly regarded departments within its disciplines in Canada. It has a large graduate program with MA and PhD degrees in both Anthropology and in Sociology.  At the undergraduate level, it offers B.A. degrees in both Sociology and Anthropology and a Bachelor of Global and International Studies with specializations in “Social Change and Inequality” and “Culture and Power,” as well as a Minor in Community Engagement. There are thirteen core Anthropology faculty members as well as ten affiliated Anthropology faculty from other units at the university and twenty-five core Sociology faculty as well as nineteen affiliated Sociology faculty from other units at the university.  In addition to disability justice, the department emphasizes social justice, community engagement, social movements, citizenship studies, and science and technology studies, as well as its growing research in environmental justice and climate change, digital social research and practice-based research methods.

About the Role

You will also have:

  • Completed a PhD in anthropology, geography or a related discipline
  • Demonstrated experience in conducting qualitative social research and a sound publication record in relevant areas

The Department of Information Security and Communication Technology has vacancies for Postdoctoral Fellows in Cyber Threat Intelligence Sharing for Improved Situational Awareness on Cyber Defence (2 positions).

The postdoctoral fellowship position is a temporary position where the main goal is to qualify for work in senior academic positions.

The postdoctoral fellows will work on research and development within the context of the EDF-funded Project “Adapting cyber situational awareness for evolving computing environments (NEWSROOM)”. The core objective of CSA in cyber defence is to provide all stakeholders and personnel of all levels and forces in the chain of command (e.g., in headquarters, in security operation centres (SOCs) on battlefields, or governmental organizations) accurate information about the current threat landscape and threat level to support establishing an appropriate cyber defence strategy and allow timely adaptation according to changes in the current operational picture and the evolving threat landscape. CSA in cyber defence must collect all available data from the internal military network infrastructure, and devices used by military units in operation and on battlefield, which includes structured and unstructured data in the form of logs, sensor data, network traffic, internal intelligence (e.g., context information), and external information from both clear and dark net, such as cyber threat intelligence (CTI), vulnerability and malware reports, security bulletins, etc. To address all these challenges, NEWSROOM studies and designs technologies and processes related to all aspects of CSA in cyber defence, including data and CTI collection, attacker behaviour and capability classification, human computer interfaces (HCIs) and visualisations, and information sharing.

The positions create an opportunity for more collaboration with other research disciplines such as security management, safety engineering, and policymaking in addition to the focus areas mentioned above.

Your immediate leader is the Head of the Department of Information Security and Communication Technology.

Duties of the position

The postdoctoral research fellows will:

  • Contribute to research and development by investigating, assessing and developing methods for:
    •  collecting data and CTI to establish a profound base for better depicting and interpreting the current threat landscape. To enable monitoring of internal infrastructures, devices, and services.
    •  collecting raw data (e.g., logs, monitoring, sensors, network traffic) from hosts on all levels, including clients used by deployed troops, assets such as IOMT, cloud servers and enterprise IT used in headquarters and governmental institutions.
    •  collecting external data, e.g., from public networks, and higher-level information, such as CTI (indicators of compromise (IoCs), vulnerabilities, tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs), patches, mitigation actions, etc.).
    •  depicting the current threat landscape and advising necessary changes in the cyber defence strategy to prepare for emerging future threats.
    •  CTI aggregation, supporting military personnel in correlating and consuming vast amounts of information.
  • Develop and pursue own research agenda in cyber physical systems risk management.
  • Contribute to the development of research and education in Critical Infrastructure Security and Resilience by leading and supporting new research and innovation.
  • Work on initiating, organizing, writing proposals for, coordinating, and carrying out national and international R&I projects of high quality, to be funded by national and international sources e.g. the NFR (The Research Council of Norway), and the European Commission.
  • Coordinate and manage the Critical Infrastructure Security and Resilience (CISaR) group teams working on R&I projects in critical infrastructure protection, cyber physical system risk management, and other areas of interest of the group.
  • Participate as an active member in CISaR activities and in activities of the Department of Information Security and Communication Technology (IIK), including supervision and co-supervision of MSc and PhD students.

Required selection criteria

  • You must have completed a Norwegian doctoral degree or corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian PhD in information security, computer science, or equivalent, with focus on the cybersecurity of critical infrastructure and/or cyber-physical systems. If you can document that the PhD thesis has been submitted, your application can be assessed even if you have not yet defended your dissertation. Documentation of the obtained doctoral degree must be presented before you can take up the position.
  • Track record with publications on relevant research areas in credible journals and conferences.
  • Being able to attend and present at national and international forums.
  • Good written and oral English language skills.

As a Postdoctoral Fellow (code 1352) you are normally paid from gross NOK  575 400 (scale 59) per annum, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 3 years. 

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU.

The postdoctoral fellowship position is a temporary position where the main goal is to qualify for work in senior academic positions.

The postdoctoral fellows will work on research and development within the context of the EDF-funded Project “Federated Advanced Cyber physical Test range (FACT)”. There are a number of cyber test ranges available (including in Europe) but the federated approach and advanced cyber physical test range capability are two elements of the FACT project which makes it disruptive and unique. The focus on Operational Technology (OT) is increasing when it comes to military systems, and the cyber physical aspect is thus of greatest importance for the FACT project. Military platforms are not easily transferable to a relevant location for test. However, the federated approach in the FACT project will allow the physical part to be implemented at more than one location, and still make use of the full capability of the partners capabilities during the testing. To ensure that the equipment is used and has a required level of protection, the FACT project will design, prototype and demonstrate a federated cyber physical test capability which can be maintained and become a sustained capability to the European nations after the project. Our approach is fully user-centric, with the end-user’s needs as the starting point for the whole capability and every consideration. Examples of test scenario setups where the federated aspect of FACT is an advantage are numerous: larger partners wanting to cooperate in larger system deliveries, smaller companies cooperating with several partners within their complimentary field of expertise, sharing vulnerabilities and mitigating actions on equipment across partners and nations for shortening time to market.

The positions create an opportunity for more collaboration with other research disciplines such as security management, safety engineering, and policymaking in addition to the focus areas mentioned above.

Postdoctoral Fellow (two posts) Visual Cognition Laboratory Office of the Faculty of Social Sciences (Post Ref.: 23/346)

The Visual Cognition Laboratory at Lingnan University (Principal Investigator: Professor Will Hayward) seeks to understand the nature of visual understanding of the world. Using a variety of methods, we have particular interest in face and object perception, as well as visual attention. Further, we collaborate with colleagues in the social sciences and public health to use psychological research methods to help address issues of major social concern. We are committed to research integrity and Open Science, and to actively supporting diversity and inclusion in science and education. The Department of Psychology is an emerging centre of research excellence, with equipment for eye-tracking and electroencephalography (EEG). Lingnan University is in the process of establishing superior IT infrastructure with which to pursue excellence in social data science.

We will shortly be starting two new funded projects, and therefore welcome applications for two Postdoctoral Fellow (PDF) positions.

Position 1. Behavioural and neural markers of face familiarity This PDF will work on a funded project to examine changes in behavioural responses, including eye-tracking, and electroencephalography (EEG), as previously novel faces become familiar through indirect (e.g., photograph) and direct (e.g., in-person meeting) exposure. The PDF will design experimental studies, oversee data collection and analysis, and provide leadership within the research team.

Position 2. Evaluation of public health and social measures used during COVID-19 pandemic This PDF will work on a project with multiple PIs from Lingnan University and The University of Hong Kong, examining the costs and benefits of social and behavioural measures used by governments during the COVID-19 pandemic. One particular focus will be to seek evidence regarding interventions employed by NGOs and government agencies to maintain social connectedness during the pandemic. Research work for this project will involve the collation of existing data sets along with the creation of new instruments, with analysis of data using state-of-the-art methods.

General Requirements The applicants should have a PhD degree in Psychology or a related field (e.g., Statistics, Public Health, Cognitive Neuroscience) with evidence of excellent research outputs. For position 1, experience with eye-tracking, EEG, and/or advanced quantitative methods/machine learning would be an advantage. For position 2, experience at working with large-scale data sets/computational social science would be an advantage. The appointee’s primary duties will be to conduct scholarly research, but they may also be asked to assist in the supervision of student research projects, and perform other duties as assigned.
