Centre for Energy Resources Engineering (CERE) at DTU Chemistry is seeking talented postdoctoral researchers to contribute to our exciting CO2 storage research in the following projects:

CompReact: Compositional simulation of reactive transport in CO2 storage

In this project, we aim to advance CO2 storage simulation technology by combining state-of-the-art equilibrium calculation algorithms with compositional simulation. We intend to take advantage of the recent development in simultaneous chemical and phase equilibrium calculation to improve the speed and reliability of CO2 storage simulation significantly. The candidate will work on integrating the novel chemical and phase equilibrium calculation algorithm into an in-house compositional simulator to simulate CO2 storage in both saline aquifers and depleted petroleum reservoirs. This requires robust and efficient calculation of multiphase equilibrium in dynamic simulation. The developed simulator will be applied to analyze both near-wellbore and reservoir-scale problems. It will also be an objective to integrate the relevant simulation methods in the advanced CO2 storage simulation software GEOSX (www.geosx.org/) through a collaboration with the current developers of GEOSX. We expect that the project will provide a new paradigm for performing compositional simulations for various underground CO2 storage processes. The project is a part of the INNO-CCUS partnership (www.inno-ccus.dk).

CO2plus: Phase behavior of CO2+X in CO2 storage

Our second project focuses on understanding the phase behavior of CO2 with different impurities or fluids at storage sites. We aim to acquire systematic knowledge and develop modeling approaches to analyze the complex phase behavior during CO2 injection and storage. The project involves experimental measurement, phase behavior modeling, and integration of the developed models into simulation analysis of injection risks and storage issues. The project is under the Innovation Fund Denmark’s Grand Solutions program.

The CERE group at DTU Chemistry possesses extensive expertise in both experimental measurement and modelling of high-pressure phase equilibrium and thermophysical properties. Furthermore, the group excels in development of efficient phase equilibrium calculation algorithms for compositional simulations. Both projects are supported by robust consortia of industrial and academic partners, ensuring that the high-level research remains relevant and applicable in real-world contexts.

Responsibilities and qualifications

Each of the two projects has one postdoc position.

The postdoc in CompReact will work on the improvement of the calculation algorithms for multiphase reactions, the integration of the multiphase reaction module into a CO2 storage simulator, and simulation analysis using the developed simulator.

The postdoc in CO2plus will work on the phase behavior modeling of CO2 rich streams and the integration of developed models into simulation analysis.

As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent) in areas such as chemical engineering, chemistry, petroleum engineering, and mathematics.

Overall, we are specifically seeking candidates who have, or are willing quickly to acquire the following skills:

  • Phase equilibrium calculation algorithms and their integration into dynamic CO2 storage simulation
  • Thermodynamic modeling of phase equilibrium and thermophysical properties related to CO2-rich mixtures.

The candidates should possess strong programming skills. It is an advantage to be familiar with thermodynamics and dynamic simulation. Since CO2plus involves measurement of phase equilibrium and thermophysical properties, it facilitates the collaboration with others in the project if the postdoc in CO2plus has relevant experimental knowledge and experience.

About the job

The focus of the job is on experimental steels research, contributing to a research project Material and structural integrity assessment for safe Nordic hydrogen transportation infrastructure. Developing safe hydrogen (H) transport infrastructure is a mutual interest for the Nordic countries. For example, pipelines provide the most feasible option for regional and inter-regional large-scale transport and storage of pressurised H gas. However, phenomenon called H-embrittlement (HE) is a key threat to the safety of H-pipelines, caused by H ingress into steel, making the pipelines prone to brittle fracture. Low winter temperatures common in the region increase embrittlement further. Remaining scientific challenge is to understand the combined influence of low temperature and HE on the mechanical properties and fracture resistance of steels.

The research is expected to focus on fundamental understanding of HE in high-strength steels, and testing and characterisation of hydrogen-steel interactions. More specifically, microstructural characterisation, fracture toughness testing, and identification of the weakest links and failure mechanisms are of especial interest.

Materials science and technology are our passion. With our cutting-edge research, Empa's around 1,100 employees make essential contributions to the well-being of society for a future worth living. Empa is a research institution of the ETH Domain.

Our Laboratory for Mechanics of Materials and Nanostructures in Thun is offering a PhD posi-tion founded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF) in the field deformation twinning mechanism of hexagonal closed packed (hcp) metals and alloys.

PhD position in the field of deformation twinning mechanism in hcp alloys (a)

The Project The development of light, strong, ductile and therefore easily formable hexagonal closed pack (hcp) alloys is one of the keys to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emission in aeronautic and transportation industries. Currently, their use as structural material is limited because of their lack of easy slip systems and a plasticity largely adapted by deformation twinning, associated with high residual stresses. The research project aim at investigating the nucleation and propagation mechanisms of deformation twinning in hcp alloys and the role of solute atoms in these processes. This will be done through the development of novel in situ testing experiments (high strain rate, cryo- to high temperatures) combined with advanced characterization techniques for strains, stresses and dislocation analyses at the nanoscale. This includes the development of in situ high-resolution transmission kikuchi diffraction technique (HR-TKD) in SEM, as well as the precession electron diffraction (PED) techniques in TEM.

Your profile You must hold a Master’s or an equivalent degree in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering or similar. A high motivation to work at the leading edge of measurement science and to work in an international, multidisciplinary research team is essential. Knowledge of English (oral and written) is required and knowledge of German or French would be an advantage. Experience in small-scale mechanical testing (nanoindentation, micropillar compression), electron microscopy based techniques (SEM, FIB and TEM) and programming (e.g. Matlab, Python or C++) is desirable.

Our offer Empa in Thun, near Bern, offers an ideal working environment with excellent infrastructure for personal and professional development and is situated in a beautiful area in the German-speaking part of Switzerland. You will be enrolled in the "Materials Science" doctoral program at EPFL in Lausanne. The starting date is as soon as possible or upon mutual agreement and the PhD project is planned for 4 years.

«a» stands for «all» in our job advertisements. We live a culture of inclusion and respect. We welcome all people who are interested in innovative, sustainable and meaningful activities. That's what counts - not age, gender, origin, religion, sexual orientation, etc.

We look forwardto receiving your complete online application including a letter of motivation, CV, certificates, diplomas and contact details of two reference persons. Please submit these exclusively via our job portal. Applications by e-mail and by post will not be considered.
