The Faculty of Computer Science at the University of New Brunswick's Fredericton Campus champions teaching and research in artificial intelligence, computer systems, human-computer interaction, and information and data science, and is home to the Canadian Institute for Cybersecurity, Canada's research leader in cybersecurity. The Faculty and the Canadian Institute for Cybersecurity (CIC) invite applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Cybersecurity. We seek exceptional candidates with high quality research and publications to strengthen and complement our current training and research programs in the field of Cybersecurity. To be considered for the position the applicant should have a PhD degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or in a relevant discipline; three years of related experience are desirable. The successful candidate is expected to develop a strong, externally funded research program, supervise graduate and undergraduate students, work with industry, and be able to teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels in Cybersecurity and other Computer Science subjects. A demonstrated willingness to work with industry is considered an asset. Exceptional oral and written communication skills and the ability to work on team projects are essential. This position is subject to final budgetary approval and will start on or after July 1, 2024. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience of the successful applicant. The Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics (CITA), a national centre hosted in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto, invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in the area of Cosmology. The appointment will be at the rank of Associate Professor, with an expected start date of July 1, 2024.

Candidates must have earned a PhD degree in Theoretical Astrophysics or a related area, with a clearly demonstrated exceptional record of excellence in research and teaching. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and enhance existing strengths in the Institute with a focus on cosmology and/or the early universe. Candidates will have an established international reputation and will be expected to sustain and lead innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to maintain an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program.

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence which can be demonstrated by a record of sustained high-impact contributions and publications in top-ranked and field relevant journals, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, distinguished awards and accolades, and other noteworthy activities that contribute to the visibility and prominence of the discipline, as well as strong endorsements from referees of high standing.

Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through teaching accomplishments (including the supervision of postdoctoral fellows and graduate students), and the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application (with required materials outlined below), as well as strong letters of reference.

The successful candidate will have a record demonstrating scientific leadership, creativity and technical depth throughout their career, as evidenced in their application materials.

CITA is the only national astrophysics theory institute in the world. The Department of Zoology in the Faculty of Science at The University of British Columbia invites applications for two Assistant/Associate Professor positions in Evolutionary Biology.  Preference is for appointments at the level of Assistant Professor, although appointments at the Associate Professor level will be considered in exceptional circumstances. These are tenure track/tenured positions, with initial appointments to be made no earlier than July 1, 2024.

We seek applicants with an innovative research program to address fundamental aspects of evolution. We are excited to consider applications from all areas of evolutionary biology. Research areas that we are excited to see include, but are by no means limited to, the following:

  • Machine learning/deep learning/ neural nets in evolutionary biology, including methods, data analysis and model testing.
  • The development and/or application of comparative and phylogenetic comparative methods.
  • High density phenomics, including the collection and/or analysis of large-scale phenotypic datasets related to morphology, behaviour or any other complex phenotype.
  • Evolutionary development.
  • Field-based approaches to evolutionary biology that study processes in natural settings.

Each position requires a Ph.D. degree, postdoctoral experience, and a strong record of research publications with demonstrated influence and creativity. Responsibilities include establishing and conducting an internationally competitive and externally funded research program, teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, supervising graduate students, and participating on service committees for the department, university, and academic/scientific community. Each successful applicant will become a member of the Department of Zoology (www.zoology.ubc.ca) and a member of the Biodiversity Research Centre (BRC, https://biodiversity.ubc.ca).  The Department of Zoology includes nearly 50 principal investigators and promotes integrative research in biology. The Green Construction through Wood (GCWood) program encourages the use of innovative wood-based building technologies in construction projects. This program supports Canada’s commitment to reach 2030 and 2050 emissions reduction targets under the Paris Agreement and advance long-term priorities regarding greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction.

GCWood invests in wood construction projects that generate many benefits, including:

  • reduced GHG emissions from renewable and sustainable resources that help decarbonize the built environment
  • accelerated adoption of innovative building technologies and systems
  • updated building codes that allow for taller and larger wood buildings
  • affordable housing and community infrastructure

Demonstration projects

Since 2017, the program has successfully funded 16 demonstration projects to de-risk and support the greater adoption and commercialization of wood-based products in the construction of tall and low-rise wood buildings and timber bridges. As of March 2023, the program has funded 4 tall wood building projects, 10 low-rise non-residential building projects, and 2 timber bridge projects.

The program produced the 2021 State of Mass Timber in Canada report and an interactive map to record, review, and analyze the rise of mass timber construction in Canada. Applicants are encouraged to review the report and interactive map to see the progress Canada has made in mass timber production, design and building, and the potential for ongoing leadership in this area.

As part of its renewal, the program has expanded its focus to fund the demonstration of schematic designs, innovative building systems for wood construction, and the use of advanced building bio-products in new and existing buildings that have low GHG emissions, are regionally representative, and are highly replicable. The GCWood program provides non-repayable contributions of up to $1.4 million of a project’s eligible costs.

The program will seek to target innovative building solutions and schematic designs under key areas of interest including, but not limited to, prefabrication including modular buildings, retrofits, and design for disassembly/adaptability.


Eligibility

GCWood funding is open to the following applicants:

  1. Legal entities validly incorporated or registered in Canada, including:
    • for-profit and not-for-profit organizations such as companies, industry associations, research associations, and standards associations
    • Indigenous organizations and groups
  2. Provincial, territorial, regional, and municipal governments and their departments and agencies, where applicable

How to apply and key dates

The GCWood program launched an ongoing Expression of Interest (EOI), which is designed to identify potential demonstration projects for funding. Applications can be submitted within our 4 application windows, detailed below. The program will process and assess proposals based on the submission date and will provide ongoing decisions as they are determined. Proposals will be assessed in the order in which they are received and efforts will be made to ensure funding is distributed appropriately across all windows.

Note: The screening process for EOIs may take between 15 to 45 days.

The program will conduct webinars to provide information on how to submit online applications, including a question and answer period with program officials. The webinar dates for the first solicitation window are included below. Additional dates for upcoming windows will be provided as they become available.   • Webinar 1 (English session): Tuesday, August 22nd at 1:00pm EST

The program uses a two phase application process:

Phase 1: Expression of Interest (EOI)

The initial proposal process requests high-level information about your organization and project.

To complete a proposal, you will need to log in with a GCKey through the NRCan Online Submission Portal.

Submit an EOI for the stream you are applying for. You can find additional details in the GCWood Applicant Guidebook. The form will take approximately 30 to 60 minutes to complete.

We strongly recommend preparing your responses in a document offline using the EOI template before copying them into the online form and submitting. Please also ensure you save the online form often (every 10 to 15 minutes).

You can save your progress and return to it at any time or review the form structure prior to beginning the process to get an idea of what to expect. You will also be able to view your EOI after you have submitted it. You can submit multiple EOIs.

Program staff will review your EOI and contact you about next steps.

Phase 2: Full Project Proposal (FPP)

Applicants who are selected to move on to Phase 2 will receive a link and an editable form to the FPP. They will be asked to submit additional information and documentation such as business financials and project plans.

Applications will be assessed against the specified Rated Program Criteria that can be found in the GC Wood Applicant Guidebook.

Final funding decisions will consider the assessment results and other criteria, such as:

  • funding requested per year and GCWood budget availability
  • distribution of funding to projects across Canada
  • distribution of funding to projects that align with eligible project categories

The assessment criteria will establish a prioritized list of eligible projects. NRCan may provide some or all the funds requested, based on the number of successful projects, the proposal evaluations, and the amount of funding available in a given year.

To apply, applicants must complete and submit their EOI form via the NRCan Online Submission Portal by 11:59 pm PST on September 30, 2023 for consideration within the first solicitation window.

Do you have an idea for an event, initiative, program or service but don't have enough money to turn it into reality? Consider applying for a Youth Grant. The purpose of this fund is to provide seed money to support or initiate events, programs and services for children and youth in the City of North Vancouver. All activities supported by this fund must be based in the City of North Vancouver, or be of primary benefit to children and youth residents in the City.
This fund is not available for sports programs, or to supplement core funding for Outreach Youth Services. Efforts should be made to involve children and youth who are not normally involved in community activities. Grants approved under this fund shall be for new events, programs or services, or to enhance existing events, programs or services, which have proven successful.

Agency Initiated Projects or Events ($3,000)

The City offers grants of up to $3,000 for special projects undertaken for children and youth up to the age of 21 years. Projects funded by these grants should be preventative in nature, providing children and youth with information, skills and activities, which enable them to live fuller, more productive, lives. Grants of up to $3,000 will be available as seed money for new projects, or to augment existing programs. Grants may be used to cover staffing costs and/or program expenses. Preference will be given to projects which exhibit inter-agency collaboration and which give special consideration to integrating children and youth with disabilities, from low-income families and of ethnic minorities.

Youth Initiated Projects or Events ($500)

The City offers grants of up to $500 for projects and events undertaken for youth between the ages of 12 and 21 years. These grants are intended to provide youth with funding assistance to put on community projects and events. The grant may be used to cover expenses such as building rental, equipment rentals, publicity, entertainment and/or refreshments.

We would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the traditional territories of the people of the Treaty 7 region in Southern Alberta. The City of Calgary is also home to Métis Nation of Alberta, Region III.

Position Overview The Department of Biological Sciences in the Faculty of Science invites applications for a Research Associate in Subsurface Hydrogen Genomics. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 24 months (based on length of grant funding).

Reporting to the Principal Investigator of the Geomicrobiology Group, the Research Associate will be a full-time employee responsible for participating in research in the area of microbial ecology and ecophysiology of subsurface microbial populations using bioinformatics, genomics, metagenomics, biogeochemistry and microbiology. The successful candidate will have experience in bioinformatics, metagenomic analysis, sequence analysis and molecular biology (e.g., quantitative and/or digital PCR). Experience working on the microbiology of extreme environments, low-biomass samples for DNA extraction, and using anaerobic cultivation techniques, will be strong assets.

The future hydrogen economy in Alberta and across the world will rely on new kinds of infrastructures and technologies including options for medium term temporary storage. Large underground hydrogen storage sites are considered attractive options in this regard, with hollowed-out salt caverns and petroleum reservoir porous rock touted as leading candidates. This offers considerable opportunity in Alberta where there is extensive expertise in the oil and gas sector, and well-understood candidate subsurface environments. While a key feature of these containment reservoirs will be the physical features in relation to H2 leakage, a less appreciated risk associated with H2 storage is the potential for biological losses due to oxidation by deep biosphere extremophile metabolism. This Research Associate will focus on assessing the microbiomes living in petroleum reservoirs and/or salt caverns and other relevant subsurface environments, with specific focus on deep biosphere populations that possess hydrogenase genes that encode the potential for H2 oxidation in these settings. The objective will be to understand, quantify and potentially control these populations if they are indeed capable of catalyzing unwanted reactions in the context of underground hydrogen storage. The position advertised here is supported by funding from the Government of Alberta (Alberta Innovates Hydrogen Centre of Excellence) and the Government of Canada (Natural Resources Canada).

Position Description Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Technical:

  • Dry lab analysis of hydrogenase genes including development of gene models (e.g., Hidden Markov Models) for accurate annotation of different hydrogenase types and sub-types
  • Wet lab experimentation on H2 oxidizing enrichments including LC and GC analytical methods
  • Metagenomic library preparation, troubleshooting, analysis, and interpretation
  • Amplicon library preparation, troubleshooting, analysis, and interpretation
  • Bioinformatics analysis of mixed community metagenomes including metagenome-assembled genomes
  • Nucleic acid extraction (DNA, RNA) from different kinds of samples using multiple approaches
  • Primer and Probe design based on hydrogenase sequence alignments
  • Quantitative analysis of target gene types and sub-types using qPCR and/or digital PCR platforms

Reporting and Publications:

  • Leading and/or supporting publication of results in peer-review journals is expected
  • Maintain a clear and well-documented log of all data, data analyses, results, and lab work
  • Meet with supervisor(s) regularly (e.g., monthly scheduled meetings, as well as interactions on a day-to-day basis) to provide update on status of project results
  • Presentation of results to the MMG research group in weekly lab meetings (e.g., once every 6 weeks) and when applicable to project end users, sponsors or other researchers (e.g., at workshops, conferences, or in private meetings with end users)

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • PhD in area of molecular microbiology or bioinformatics or a similar topic is required
  • 5-7 years of related work experience required
  • First-author publication track record in leading journals (e.g., ISME Journal, Environmental Microbiology, etc) is required.
  • Familiarity with bioinformatics software applications and/or development, including those applied in but not limited to genomics, metagenomics and other microbial multi-omics applications (e.g., packages requiring use of UNIX and R command line) is required
  • Experience in and knowledge of environmental microbiology is required
  • Proficiency with computational bioinformatics tools is required
  • Experience in analysing terabyte-scale sequencing data is an asset
  • Knowledge of WHMIS is required
  • Ability to multi-task and deal with some repetitive tasks is required
  • Strong organizational and time management skills is required
  • Good verbal and written communication skills is required
  • Must be comfortable working in a diverse research team and have good interpersonal skills
  • Previous experience with mentoring early career scientists (e.g. graduate students) is an asset

The Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) program provides merit-based scholarships to recognize academic excellence in all disciplines of academic studies at the master’s and doctoral level. The scholarship is jointly funded by the Ministry of Colleges and Universities (‘Ministry’) and Carleton University. The Ministry provides two-thirds of the value of the award and the university one-third.

Value and Duration

The OGS is valued at $15,000 for one year: $5,000 per term up to a maximum of three (3) terms, and must be held for a minimum of two (2) consecutive terms.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, or Protected Person under subsection 95(2) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada) at the time of the application deadline; International students who are studying in Ontario with a study permit under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada) at the time of application are eligible to apply for the allotted OGS international student awards
  • Applicants must have a 10.0 GPA (A-) in each of their last two years of full-time study
  • Applicants must be enrolled full-time or intend to be enrolled full-time in a graduate program at Carleton University in the 2024-25 academic year. Students with disabilities may study part-time
  • Applicants who are in or will be going into an extension term in the graduate program for which they are requesting funding are not eligible to hold an OGS
  • Applicants whose program time to completion is before December 31 of the academic year in which they would hold the award are not eligible to apply

    • Master’s students can receive an OGS award for a maximum of two (2) academic years

The Department of Psychiatry and Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry at Western University is inviting applications for a full-time clinical academic faculty position as a Medical Director, Outpatients and Psychiatrist at the Parkwood Institute Mental Health Building, part of St. Joseph’s Health Care London. Parkwood Institute is an academic centre with a strong mandate for excellence in care, education and research. It is also a core training site for undergraduate, postgraduate and subspecialty trainees, and has an active research program. The program is affiliated with the Lawson Health Research Institute and Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry.

We are looking for a dynamic and experienced Medical Director to provide medical leadership to our outpatient programs at the Parkwood Institute Mental Health Building. The Medical Director, Outpatients works collaboratively in a leadership dyad with the Clinical Director, Outpatients and will be responsible for the quality of care and performance of all outpatient physician services. They will be supported in their work by up to three Physician Clinical Leads, responsible for day to day operational leadership. The applicant will have an established career in rehabilitation psychiatry and a proven academic, administrative and clinical track record with a minimum of 3-5 years’ experience in a leadership position. Administrative leadership skills are required to assist in strategic planning, physician management, program planning, quality improvement, and capacity building and collaboration both within the program, the department and across the region. The desired candidate will also have the skills and expertise to contribute to a culture of continuous learning and education, along with evidence of impact in the areas of research and innovation. Knowledge of, and dedication to, a recovery-oriented treatment philosophy is required. Knowledge of the Canadian and Ontario legal and mental health systems and legislation is preferred.

The Medical Director, Outpatients will provide strategic leadership to physicians and staff congruent with the clinical and academic goals and mission of St. Joseph’s Health Care London, the Department of Psychiatry and the Divisions of General Adult Psychiatry and Geriatric Psychiatry. The Medical Director, Outpatients will serve as a direct report to the Site Chief of St Joseph’s Mental Health Care program. They will be responsible for providing leadership to implement high quality and efficient clinical and academic work in a collegial, cooperative and collaborative environment. The Medical Director, Outpatients will work closely with the division chairs for matters that require division advocacy, support, validation or approval. The Medical Director provides leadership to the Program’s researchers along with the division chairs. The Medical Director participates and collaborates on St. Joseph’s Foundation initiatives.

Parkwood Institute Mental Health Building is a 150-bed specialized facility that provides care for patients with serious mental illness across a continuum from short-term consultation, collaborative care, intensive assertive community treatment and inpatient care. Our organization is recovery oriented with a strong focus on the use of psychiatric rehabilitation, evidence-informed psychotherapies, complex psychopharmacology and other evidence-based modalities (e.g. ECT and TMS). The outpatient programs consist of regional services in the counties of London-Middlesex, Oxford, Elgin, Huron, Perth, Grey, and Bruce, with 7 Assertive Community Treatment teams, 5 Adult Ambulatory teams (including Concurrent Disorders Services), and 3 Geriatric Ambulatory programs, amongst a number of smaller clinical programs.

Academic rank (Assistant, Associate or Professor) and appointment status (limited term or continuing) will be determined by experience and qualifications at the time of appointment. Candidates must hold an MD or equivalent and be eligible for licensure in the Province of Ontario. The successful candidate must have, or be willing to work toward, a specialist certification in Psychiatry from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

This position is a 0.2 FTE administrative position with 0.8 FTE clinical duties to be negotiated.

Term: The term for this medical director leadership role is five years, once renewable, and the base clinical appointment will be determined by rank and qualifications. The successful candidate’s clinical privileges and academic affiliation can extend beyond the tenure for this role.

More About Us The Department of Psychiatry is organized around four academic divisions including General Adult Psychiatry, Geriatric Psychiatry, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and Forensic Psychiatry. The Department also has internationally recognized strengths in child and adolescent psychiatry, psychosis, neuroimaging, mood and anxiety disorders, PTSD, and developmental disabilities.

SWC’s mission is to provide specialized assessment and treatment for people in contact with the criminal justice system. Duties: The primary responsibilities of this position are the preparation and delivery of the laboratory component of second- and third-year analytical chemistry courses. Some lecture-based instruction and course preparation will also be required.

The Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) at Western University invites applications for a full-time probationary (tenure-track) position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the School of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) with academic responsibilities in research, teaching, and service. The anticipated start date will be July 1, 2024, or as negotiated. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

We are seeking energetic and dynamic candidates who will be able to contribute substantially to the teaching, research, and service efforts of the School in the field of speech-language pathology. Applicants demonstrating expertise in voice, fluency and/or acquired speech disorders are especially encouraged to apply. However, applicants with research expertise in medical speech-language pathology or other topic areas will also be considered. The successful candidate will also have a demonstrated capacity to contribute substantively to an inclusive and diverse academic community.

Applicants are encouraged to think about how their research program complements our existing research areas identified in the Faculty of Health Sciences Strategic Research Plan and in the School of CSD Strategic Plan. The successful candidate will have opportunities to develop collaborative relationships with current CSD faculty conducting research in related areas (e.g., PRECISe [Practice-Based Research Collaborative in Speech-Language Pathology], an FHS Research Group) as well as a number of researchers in other Faculties and programs at Western including the internationally acclaimed National Centre for Audiology, the Canadian Centre for Activity and Aging, and The Brain and Mind Institute, among others. The selected appointee will be expected to establish and maintain an externally funded research program, teach in the School of CSD, and supervise research-based graduate students in the FHS graduate programs.

The School of CSD is an international leader in the professions of audiology and speech-language pathology, offering Master of Clinical Science degrees in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology and participating in the Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (HRS) Graduate Program. The HRS Program was the first in Canada to host a combined clinical- research degree (i.e., MClSc-PhD) in Speech and Language Sciences and in Hearing Sciences. The School maintains the research-oriented H.A. Leeper Speech and Hearing Clinic, which includes the provincially-funded tykeTALK and Infant Hearing Programs. Within audiology, current specialized clinical services include infant assessment and assistive device fitting, pediatric amplification, aural rehabilitation, and geriatrics. Within speech-language pathology, the clinic currently provides specializations in preschool speech and language, speech and language disorders in school-age children, and adult and adolescent voice, fluency and acquired neurogenic communication disorders. The School’s faculty members are active and productive researchers, engaged in both theoretical and clinical work. The School and the Faculty are committed to developing new as well as expanding existing partnerships with local, regional, national, and international interdisciplinary colleagues. Qualifications:

  • PhD or equivalent in speech-language pathology or a related field
  • Eligibility for licensure with the College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario preferred
  • Demonstrated potential to establish an independent research program in communication sciences and disorders
  • Demonstrated excellence in and ability to contribute to graduate level teaching in communication sciences and disorders
