Department summary The Department of Biological Sciences is one of the largest and most diverse on campus in terms of the research interests of its academic staff. Our department is home to a wide range of research areas, and we offer outstanding core facilities that provide essential services to our researchers. Opportunities for collaborative research projects are excellent.

Position summary: We are seeking applications for up to two full-time Research Associate positions for initially two years. The primary purpose of these positions is to carry out experimental work in the King-Jones laboratory to investigate the relationships between iron homeostasis and ecdysone biosynthesis in Drosophila. The successful candidate(s) will be conducting experiments that require the latest molecular and genetic techniques, including Cut & Tag,TurboID, Co-IP, EMSA, FLP-FRT, CRISPR-Cas9, etc. Applicants must have extensive experience with Drosophila genetics, CRISPR/Cas9, transgenics, immunoprecipitation, embryoinjections, genomic data analysis and proteomics.

Duties:

  • Research design, methodology determination, analysis, and other activities
  • All phases of data collection and analysis
  • Preparation of manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed scientific journals
  • Regular communication and collaboration with the Principal Investigator, collaborators at other universities and research institutes

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in a relevant field (e.g., Molecular Biology, Genetics)
  • At least 3 years of postdoctoral experience
  • At least 3 years of work experience in a Drosophila as a model
  • Proven publication track record
  • Excellent ability to write research manuscripts in English
  • At least one first-authored peer-reviewed publications in the past seven years, but a higher publication record will be viewed favorably
  • Extensive experience with Drosophila as a research model is required
  • Experience in Cut & Tag, TurboID, and CRISPR/Cas9 or Cas13
  • Experience in data-mining of Genomics and Proteomics experiments and traansgenesis

CHAIR

Carrie graduated from the University of Guelph in 2003 with a degree in both Political Science and French. After spending 12 years working in the agriculture industry, she made the switch to steel and is currently employed at Vicwest in Stratford.  She enjoys learning, is fascinated by culture, and loves to travel. She is honoured to have had the opportunity to participate in various exchange programs through The Rural Ontario Institute, and Rotary International.  Carrie and her husband Alex reside in Wellesley, and they can both be found at the curling rink as many days per week as possible.  She loves the Olympics, animals, reading, music, and a smorgasboard of physical activities.

The Operations and Logistics Division of the Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver Campus) invites applications for up to three tenure-track faculty positions in operations research, operations management and transportation, with the possibility of an additional opportunity becoming available. Although preference will be given to applications at the Assistant Professor rank, we will also consider applications at the Associate and Full Professor ranks. Applicants must have a record of research commensurate with the rank and a demonstrated successful experience in teaching. Senior-level candidates should have accomplished excellence in research in operations research, operations management or transportation. Entry-level candidates should demonstrate an interest in and potential to conduct high-quality research in these fields and be very close to completing or have completed a Ph.D. in a relevant area such as operations research, operations management, engineering, applied mathematics, statistics, computer science, or other related areas. The successful candidate will be appointed at the rank appropriate to their qualification and experience.

Duties include developing and maintaining an active research program aimed at making a significant contribution to the profession, teaching in the undergraduate, master’s and Ph.D. programs, supervising Ph.D. students, as well as contributing to other teaching and administrative initiatives of the Operations and Logistics Division and the UBC Sauder School of Business. Candidates at the senior level will be expected to provide leadership to enhance the reputation of the Operations and Logistics Division and the School. Teaching and service requirements are similar to other research-intensive universities.

A completed application will include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, a research statement, research papers (i.e., one or two recently published research papers or current working papers), and a teaching dossier or record of teaching effectiveness, if applicable. Position description The Gail and Stephen A. Jarislowsky Institute for Studies in Canadian Art, founded in 1998, invites applications for the position of Research Chair and Director of the Institute to begin August 1, 2024. The Research Chair and Director will hold a full-time tenured faculty appointment at the rank of Associate Professor in the Department of Art History; applications will be accepted from external and internal candidates alike.

The core responsibilities for the position are to develop and support research initiatives at different scales, promoting scholarship in Canadian art histories; to provide intellectual and administrative leadership for the Institute; to teach and supervise graduate and undergraduate students within the Art History department; to actively seek external funding related to the Institute and the chair; and to engage in a broad and ongoing dialogue with educational and cultural institutions dedicated to studies in the visual arts of Canada.

  • The Director develops strategic directions for the Institute and facilitates its activities including programming, outreach, and student training; the director’s role involves communication within the unit and externally to partner members and institutions; alignment with collective agreements and university policies; and fiscal management, including the submission of annual and other university-mandated reporting.
  • The Research Chair develops and supports research networks and partnerships related to Canadian art histories and visual culture.
  • The faculty appointment contributes to the teaching of Canadian art and visual culture at both undergraduate and graduate levels, including active supervision of students in MA and PhD programs, and participates actively in the collegial governance of the Department of Art History.

The Research Chair (5-year term) and directorship (4-year term) are subject to renewal; annual reporting and mid-term reviews are required. Both positions come with annual research and salary stipends, as well as teaching remissions totalling 6 credits per annum.

Qualifications and assets The successful candidate will have a PhD in Art History or a related field, and will provide evidence of high-quality scholarly output, an important grant-funding profile, and excellence in teaching and leadership in academic administration. They will be an outstanding researcher and/or research-creator, with a strong record (5-7 years minimum) of university teaching, research, service, and administration, and considerable expertise in one or more facets of Canadian Art as broadly conceived. This may include (but is not limited to) a further specialization in art history and visual culture, craft and design history, photo history, architectural history, etc.

Candidates are encouraged to share any career interruptions or personal circumstances that may have had an impact on their career goals in their letter of application. These will be carefully considered in the assessment process. This position In the context of this wider initiative, the Department of Civil Engineering seeks to hire a tenure-track Assistant Professor to develop a research program related to Civil Engineering design with explicit consideration of equity, ethics, and/or impacts on marginalized people and communities. Civil systems are central to the functioning of society, and the work of civil engineers, even highly technical analysis, often has enormous and unequal impacts on people and communities. Civil engineers must play a leading role in not just mitigating and adapting to climate change, but also addressing the disproportionate impacts of the climate emergency on vulnerable populations. In the Canadian context, it is also particularly important that the profession of civil engineering contributes to reconciliation with Indigenous communities.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop an independent and internationally recognized research program that advances civil engineering design by incorporating the complexities of people’s interactions with the built and natural environments. This socio-technical framing can apply to nearly any area of civil engineering, and so this position can sit within any (or multiple) of the sub-disciplines in the Department (structural, geotechnical, environmental, transportation, hydrotechnical, etc.). The position will involve teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, the supervision of graduate students at the Masters and Doctoral levels and the provision of service to the University and the broader community. The Outer Space Institute (OSI) is inviting applications for two post-doctoral research fellowships in the field of space security, broadly defined.

The OSI is a network of world-leading space experts united by their commitment to highly innovative, transdisciplinary research that addresses grand challenges facing the continued use and exploration of space. Comprised of physical scientists, social scientists, lawyers, engineers, industry leaders, and policy makers, the OSI seeks to identify problems and solutions that have been overlooked by other groups.

The two post-doc fellowships provide the same degree of support as top Canadian post-doctoral fellowships: CAD$70,000 per year (taxable). They are for 2 years, with the possibility of a short extension. Additional funds will be available for travel and research.

The positions will be based in the Department of Political Science at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, but the research will be transdisciplinary and candidates from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply, including but not limited to engineering and physical sciences, law, and social sciences. University Canada West has opened a new campus at Vancouver House and is experiencing significant growth. We are seeking a passionate learner-centered sessional faculty with specializations to teach:

ANTHROPOLOGY: ANTH 102: Introduction to Anthropology

About University Canada West UCW is a business and technology oriented, teaching intensive university and has the fastest growing MBA program in Canada. Balanced with a BCOM degree, a BA in Business Communications and an AA degree, UCW offers students a solid grounding in academic knowledge and skills, interactive, experiential education in business and digital literacy skills. Faculty are responsible for interactive engaging teaching, staying active in their field through scholarly activities, and serving their Departments and the UCW university community through committee work. Responsibilities include working with colleagues to develop or modify the curriculum, preparing and updating course materials, teaching, working with students to improve their knowledge and career readiness skills, assessing student progress through grading assignments, papers, exams and other work, and maintaining currency about changes and innovations in your field and related teaching implications (examples, activities, approaches).

Specific Responsibilities

Faculty will:

  • Create a positive classroom and learning environment through effective student engagement
  • Provide constructive feedback to facilitate student learning and achievement
  • Employ a variety of appropriate teaching/learning strategies and activities to actively engage students and to apply their learning
  • Guide class discussions while encouraging debate, critical thinking and constructive feedback by students
  • Employ and further develop skills in academic technologies and tools to enhance and support student learning
  • Ensure teaching design and methods comply with pedagogical and UCW standards
  • Assess student achievement of learning outcomes using a variety of assessments and learning activities
  • Develop, revise and adapt appropriate learning resources for students
  • Provide academic support to students inside and outside of the classroom (regularly scheduled office hours, email, group study sessions, etc.)
  • Make appropriate student referrals to academic and personal university support programs as and when needed
  • Contribute to high quality curriculum development and revision
  • Maintain contacts with relevant industry and professional associations
  • Attend and participate in department and university faculty meetings pertinent to faculty responsibilities
  • Contribute to professional conferences, seminars, and workshops in your field of expertise and in teaching and learning
  • Remain current in technical knowledge and instructional delivery approaches and techniques
  • Participate in professional development workshops, seminars and training and maintain your own continuing professional development
  • Conduct further research into their specific field of knowledge and/or scholarship of teaching and learning
  • Depending on expertise, instruct in a range of programs such as in the ACBSP accredited BCom & MBA programs, or in the BA Business Communications or Associate of Arts degrees.

General Requirements and Competencies for All Faculty

Minimum:

  • Master’s degree in a relevant discipline
  • Demonstrated experience in effective teaching at the post-secondary level

  • Ph.D. in Anthropology or applicants who will have successfully defended the Ph.D. dissertation by the position start date
  • A strong background in ethnographic research methods and engagement with critical approaches to health, race, decolonization, and globalization
  • A combination of an MA in Anthropology with relevant professional experience in Indigenous cultural and/or community engagement will also be considered
