Job description

The University of Stavanger invites applicants for a PhD Fellowship in Environmental History at the Faculty of Education and Humanities, Department of Cultural Studies and Languages. The position is vacant from May 1, 2024.

This is a trainee position that will give promising researchers an opportunity for academic development through a PhD education leading to a doctoral degree.

The hired candidate will be admitted to the PhD program in Educational Sciences and Humanities. The education includes relevant courses amounting to about six months of study, a dissertation based on independent research, participation in national and international research environments, relevant academic communication, a trial lecture and public defence. Read more about the PhD education at UiS on our website.

The appointment is for three years with research duties exclusively, or four years with both research and 25% required duties. This will be clarified in the recruitment process.

Research topic

The research theme for the position is medieval environmental history, which investigates the ways that people from ca. 300-1500 understood and interacted with their natural world, how people have impacted the environment, how natural forces (such as climate and disease) affected human societies, and how in turn their socio-cultural structures influenced how people worked within environments. The candidate can propose a project on any place, time, or topic that fits within the frame of 300-1500 within Europe. Though all topics are welcome, we particularly invite candidates with an interest in histories of water, animals, saints, or environmental storytelling.

The project will be supervised by Professor Dolly Jørgensen with co-supervision by Dr. Ellen Arnold. The PhD will be associated with the Greenhouse Center for Environmental Humanities (see www.uis.no/greenhouse). The fellow will be expected to participate actively in the Greenhouse community. This position is open to international recruitment, and the PhD will be written in English. Candidates should already have the ability to work with the medieval languages needed for the project.

Project proposal

As an applicant, you must prepare a preliminary project proposal for a doctoral project within the subject area, which explains the problem, relevance, theoretical and methodological approach. Your preliminary project proposal will be included in the application assessment.

During the first three months of the employment period, the project proposal and progress plan will be further developed in cooperation with your supervisors and completed for the final plan for the PhD-project. A project proposal template can be found here.

Offer Description

There is a vacancy for a PhD Research Fellow position in terrestrial ecology at the Department of Biological Sciences (BIO), University of Bergen. The position is for a fixed-term period of 3 years with the possibility of a 4 th year with compulsory other work (e.g. teaching duties at the Department) and is associated with the Ecological and Environmental Change research group. The position is funded by the University of Bergen. About the project/work tasks: In current attempts to understand how environmental change affects ecosystems, the focus is often on species abundances and distributions (range limits), while species interaction data remain sporadic. Meanwhile, recent long-term studies show that the strength of interactions may also be changing within species ranges regardless of predicted range shifts. It is important to establish the extent of such “invisible” change within ecosystems, because ultimately the functioning and stability of a species (or network of species) depends on the strengths of its interactions more than on its presence or absence. The focus here is on terrestrial ecosystems and particularly temperate forests. The candidate will use hole-nesting birds and their trophic interactions along an urbanisation gradient to study the combined effects of habitat degradation and climatic factors on species interactions. The candidate is expected to develop their research empirically through the monitoring of hole-nesting birds in local nestbox populations and the use of data collected in the past decade. Some of these questions may also be addressed at a broader scale through international collaborations. The candidate will be based at the University of Bergen, with the possibility of short stays abroad for the purposes of collaboration.

Post-Doctoral Associates in the Center for Brain and Health (CBH) & ASPIRE Precision Medicine Research Institute - Dr. Bas Rokers

Description

The Center for Brain and Health and the ASPIRE Precision Medicine Research Institute at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) seek to recruit Post-Doctoral Associates for two projects for Rokers Vision Lab reporting to Dr. Bas Rokers.

1) Linking Retinal, Neural, and Perceptual Deficits in Visual Disorder:

Individuals in the UAE are at substantial risk for perceptual deficits due in part to one of the highest diabetes rates in the world. About 10% of diabetic patients suffer severe vision loss and another 2% are completely blind 15 years post-diagnosis. Thus, understanding precisely how diabetes leads to visual deficits is a question with key regional relevance.

Importantly, diabetic vision loss is not fully explained by retinal damage alone. Instead it is likely that microstructural damage in the brain as well as the eye contribute. Since early risk prediction and timely intervention can mitigate vision loss, it is critical that we fully understand the underlying cause(s). This project aims to identify biomarkers in the eye and brain that explain vision loss, building on our previously-developed method linking clinical, neural and behavioral data (Allen et al., 2018; Miller et al., 2019; Pedersini et al., 2023). We combine ophthalmological, neuroimaging and behavioral data, and incorporate deep learning methods to facilitate biomarker discovery and enhance predictive power. As a postdoctoral associate you will join a multidisciplinary research team including experts at NYUAD and Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi with a demonstrated track record in vision science, neuro-imaging, neuro-ophthalmology and deep learning.

2) Using Advanced Imaging-derived Biomarkers to Predict Health Outcomes:

Neurological problems, such as stroke, are a likely consequence of obesity, diabetes, MS, and cardiovascular disease. Since these conditions are prevalent in the UAE, identifying the factors that predict and mitigate the risk of stroke early is critical to local health. To this end, NYUAD recently initiated the first large epidemiological study in the UAE – the UAE Healthy Future Study (UAE-HFS), a prospective cohort study of 20,000 UAE nationals aged 18- 40 years which seeks to determine how health is affected by lifestyle, environment, and genes. While these risk factors will be important in understanding long-term health, it is not yet clear how physiological data, such as neuro-imaging can advance our understanding of health outcomes.

This project seeks to address this critical gap in our knowledge. A key limitation of previous work has been a focus on individual imaging modalities (e.g., fMRI, diffusion imaging) at the exclusion of combining information across modalities. Our long-term objective is to develop a “phenotypic fingerprint” from multimodal imaging data in healthy controls to be used as an early predictor of adverse neurologic events. The overarching aim of this project, which represents the first step in this objective, seeks to develop and validate this pipeline.

Our approach is to recruit healthy control subjects and patients through collaborations with Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi to develop and test the “phenotypic fingerprint” method. This approach is inspired by large ongoing studies including the UK Biobank and the Human Connectome Project, but with a focus on the local population, which present a unique genetic makeup, and regionally-relevant disorders. As a postdoctoral associate you will join a multidisciplinary research team with expertise in neuro-imaging (Rokers, Abdullah) and experience applying multimodal imaging to health-related issues and public health (Ali, Cho).

Job Requirements:

Required expertise includes strong knowledge of sensory neuroscience and expertise in at least one of the imaging methodologies involved in the project (OCT-A, structural MRI, fMRI, dMRI, ASL). For a competitive application at the post-doctoral level, candidates should demonstrate experience in leading imaging studies, as shown by publications in international scientific journals. The successful candidates will work in a multidisciplinary Center environment with world-class research infrastructure, consisting of PhD-level scientists, graduate and undergraduate students.

The positions are funded for two years with the possibility of renewal.

The terms of employment are extremely competitive and include housing and educational subsidies for children. Applications will be accepted immediately and candidates will be considered until the positions are filled. For formal consideration, applicants should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, statement of research interests, expected date of availability, and contact information for at least 2 letters of recommendation all in PDF format, via Interfolio.

Questions regarding specifics for this position may be directed to Dr. Bas Rokers at br87@nyu.edu

Offer Description

Are you interested in working with accelerator physics towards large-scale neutron experiments, with the support of competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Are you looking for an employer that invests in sustainable employeeship and offers safe, favourable working conditions? We welcome you to apply for a researcher position at Uppsala University.

The Department of Physics and Astronomy is one of Uppsala University's largest, with almost 400 employees, of which about 100 are doctoral students. The department conducts world-class research and education in both theoretical and experimental physics and has extensive collaboration with the outside world. Read more at www.physics.uu.se.

One of the divisions at the department is the FREIA Laboratory, where we work with designing, developing and testing equipment and instruments for particle accelerators. FREIA collaborates with industrial partners as well as with research institutes and universities nationally and globally, and has strong connections to research infrastructures such as the European Spallation Source in Lund, and CERN in Switzerland.

We are currently looking for a researcher to work with a European project in accelerator development for a large-scale neutrino physics project, the ESS neutrino Super-Beam (ESSnuSB). It is based on the use of the particle accelerator facility for the European Spallation Source (ESS), currently being built in Lund, Sweden. The main objective of the ESSnuSB project is to measure charge-parity violation in leptons by studying and comparing the oscillations of neutrinos and anti-neutrinos, respectively, with the purpose of explaining how matter could remain in the Universe following the global annihilation between the matter and antimatter created in the Big Bang. To achieve this, we need to expand the accelerator complex at ESS by adding an accumulator ring, where the pulses from the ESS linac are compressed. The compressed pulses will be sent to a target where the neutrino super-beam is formed. The neutrino oscillation parameters will be studied in a large detector, located about 360 km from the source. In addition, we are working on yet another addition: a nuSTORM facility (neutrinos from stored muons), which includes a muon storage ring that would be used for generating a neutrino beam for neutrino cross-section measurements. The design of the muon storage ring is particularly challenging due to the fact that the muon beam is large and has a large energy spread. We need to find a design that allows for storing enough muons to achieve the goals of the experiment. The successful candidate will be involved in the work with designing and evaluating the muon storage ring as well as with other aspects of the ESSnuSB accelerator complex, in accordance with the interest and background of the applicant.

The work is organized in a European consortium with partners at, for example, ESS in Sweden, Strasbourg in France, and CERN in Switzerland.

Duties The researcher will together with other team members design a racetrack muon storage ring, including the injection system. The work will involve beam optics and dynamics simulations using multi-particle tracking software. It may also include assessing the technical feasibility of certain subsystems. Since the project is organized in a European consortium it will involve collaborating with other researchers in Uppsala and throughout Europe, and will involve traveling to partners and accelerator facilities. Regular oral and written reporting are also part of the duties.

Requirements PhD degree in physics, or equivalent. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment

The following skills, competences and approaches are required for the position:

  • Excellent collaboration skills
  • Good communication skills, oral as well as in writing.
  • Very good knowledge of English in speech and writing.
  • A structured approach, to take initiative, and to independently push the project forward.
  • Several years’ experience in accelerator physics and design, and associated computational methods are requirements.

Additional qualifications The following experiences and skills are meriting for the position

  • Documented skills in using beam optics software such as MADX, BMAD, TraceWin or similar.
  • Experience from multi-particle tracking software such as Xsuite, pyORBIT, ORBIT, PTC-ORBT or G4Beamline.
  • Experience from accelerator operations and commissioning.
  • Experience from working with fixed-field alternating gradient accelerators (FFA).

About the employment The employment is a temporary position, 12 months. Scope of employment 100%. Starting date 1 May 2024 or as agreed. Placement: Uppsala

For further information about the position, please contact: Maja Olvegård, +46 72 9999 627 maja.olvegard@physics.uu.se

Please submit your application by 15 April 2024, UFV-PA 2024/963.

Description de l'offre
