The Helmholtz Association is seeking up to 9 LEADERS

At least € 300,000 p.a. for your own research group for a five-year period | option for a permanent contract | world-class research infrastructures | customized leadership training for future leaders in science

Helmholtz contributes to solving major challenges faced by the society, science, and the economy through scientific endeavours in six research fields: energy, earth and environment, health, information, matter, and aeronautics, space, and transport. Helmholtz is the largest scientific organization in Germany with more than 42,000 employees at 18 research centers and an annual budget of approx. 5 billion euros.

The Helmholtz Young Investigator Groups program offers early scientific independence to excellent researchers, who have to opportunity to lead their first independent research group. Groups are set up as joint projects of a Helmholtz center and a German partner university. The funding is € 300,000 p.a. minimum for a period of five years with an option for a permanent position after positive evaluation. During the funding period, the group leaders receive tailormade leadership training.

Apply if you have:

  • between 2 to 6 years of research experience after your PhD award (academic age)
  • an exceptional scientific track record
  • international research experience
  • an innovative research project in one of Helmholtz’ research fields

Application procedure:

STEP 1: Please contact the Helmholtz center you are interested in as soon as possible, but until January 14, 2022, the latest. The centers pre-select the applicants. You find the contact persons for each center when you follow the link below.

STEP 2: The Helmholtz centers nominate applicants for the Helmholtz-wide selection process by May 3, 22.

STEP 3: The applications are peer-reviewed. Based on the reviews, Helmholtz invites the most promising candidates to present their proposal to a selection panel on October 4-5, 2022.
