Position Description:
The Arts Postdoctoral Fellow in Respectful, Relational Repatriation will assist with full research and project management of the repatriation initiative in the Department of Anthropology, in the Faculty of Arts, at the University of Manitoba. They will be co-supervised by Dr. Lara Rosenoff Gauvin (Cultural Anthropologist) and Dr. Julia Gamble (Biological Anthropologist).

Responsibilities:

  • Conducting Indigenous-led research to support the Respectful Repatriation Initiative. This includes: i) engagement with Indigenous leaders, partners, descendant communities, and other provincial institutions to guide the work; ii) archival and collections research as identified by Indigenous leaders to support decision making and creation of respectful process.
  • Compiling reports on the initiative in consultation with Indigenous leaders and partners; including collaborative analysis and communication.
  • Relevant archaeological collections identification and management.
  • Drafting grant applications.
  • Day-to-day supervision of student research assistants and contract staff working on the Department of Anthropology’s Repatriation initiative.
  • Participating in meetings of the Anthropology Department’s Repatriation Committee and with supervisors.

Position Location: The University of Manitoba is located in Winnipeg on Treaty 1 territory, and on the original lands of the Anishinaabeg, Cree, Oji-Cree, Dene, and Dakota peoples, and on the homeland of the Métis Nation.

Qualifications: PhD in Anthropology, Indigenous Studies, Museology, or other relevant discipline. Excellent research, writing, and public communications skills, experience with collections’ identifications and catalogues, grant applications, project management, budget management, inter-institutional communication, and working with sensitive and/or protected information. Familiarity with the current context of repatriation and Indigenous-led initiatives nationally, and globally.
