The University of Liverpool Management School is inviting applications from prospective Accounting and Finance PhD candidates with an outstanding academic achievement and research potential for a number of 4-year GTF Studentships (Graduate Teaching Fellowships) in the 2023/24 academic year.
The Accounting and Finance Group
We are one of the largest Accounting and Finance Groups in the UK, part of the triple-accredited (AACSB, AMBA, and EQUIS) University of Liverpool Management School. We conduct evidence-based, practice-relevant research, with key areas of expertise being empirical asset pricing, corporate governance, market-based accounting and international macro-finance. We are now seeking applications from high calibre prospective PhD students, primarily in these research areas.
The Accounting and Finance group is part of the ULMS Business and Management category that has excellent performance in the UK 2021 Research Excellent Framework (REF) ranking. It was ranked 9th across the sector for Research Power; 18th across the sector for 4* Impact; 19th across the sector for 4* Environment; and 17th across the sector for 4* Outputs.
We offer a strongly collegial and intellectually stimulating research environment with excellent provision for PhD students. The Group is comprised of 35 research active academics, who regularly publish in a range of top scholarly journals such as the Journal of Financial Economics, Review of Financial Studies, Journal of Accounting and Economics, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Journal of Econometrics, Management Science, and the Review of Finance, and present their research in the leading international conferences of the field. More information about the research interests of members of the Group can be found here.
We also subscribe to a wide range of state-of-the-art financial and accounting databases that facilitate empirical research and we host prominent international speakers in our seminar series and workshops, offering excellent networking opportunities.
4-year Graduate Teaching Fellowships (GTFs) in Accounting and Finance
The Graduate Teaching Fellowships provide an opportunity for applicants with a Master’s degree (preferably with a Distinction grade) in a relevant subject and a strong commitment to research, to combine studying for a PhD in Accounting and Finance with the acquisition of teaching experience.
Participating in the Scheme will enable GTFs to secure funding for their doctoral research whilst receiving training and mentoring to become well-rounded academics.♦ In addition to conducting their research, they will have the opportunity to contribute to ULMS’s research culture and to the delivery of an outstanding learning experience for students in the School.
In year one of the programme, fellows are required to demonstrate progress in developing their research skills and knowledge by completing 4 PhD-level modules in Accounting and Finance. Further research training opportunities are provided via our partner Universities in the North West Social Science Doctoral Training Partnership. Year one also requires completion of a teacher training programme offered by the University of Liverpool primarily through shadowing and mentored classroom involvement. Successful candidates will be required to complete a total of 300 hours of teaching during their programme, alongside the doctoral research thesis.
GTFs will receive an annual stipend of £17,668 plus a fee waiver and will have access to student support funds in line with the wider doctoral training provision at ULMS. These fellowships are open to all nationalities. Overseas students will receive a fee waiver at the Home rate but a top up payment may be available subject to budget. The maintenance grant for Overseas and Home students is the same amount.
Candidates are expected to contact potential supervisors in the Accounting and Finance Group before the deadline to explore whether collaboration can be initiated.
