Research Assistant in Bioinformatics and Metagenomics Analysis

Global emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) are among the biggest challenges for human and animal health.

The Genomic Epidemiology Research Group, has as the primary task to conduct targeted research with the aim of predicting and preventing infectious diseases in humans and animals, and supporting global detection, surveillance and control, with a specific focus on AMR. The research group combines expertise in conventional and molecular microbiology with epidemiology and bioinformatics and act as EU and WHO reference center for AMR.

The Genomic Epidemiology Research Group is together with several partners worldwide working on establishing and improving global surveillance of AMR. This is mainly based on metagenomics analyses of sewage, but there is a need to link these data to data on AMR-genes from single isolates and whole genome sequence (WGS) analysis from clinical and other sources.

The group has developed online metagenomics and WGS tools for bacterial genome analysis, which have been accessed by users around the world. The group has full access to Computerome (Danish National Supercomputer for Life Sciences). In addition, the group ensures availability of intellectual expertise and technology to execute the project, including all facilities for molecular biology experiments, bioinformatics facilities, and expertise in whole genome sequencing, metagenomics, and machine learning.

For this, the Research Group for Genomic Epidemiology, National Food Institute, DTU seeks a candidate for a vacant Research Assistant position in bioinformatics on metagenomics and whole genome sequencing analysis.

Responsibilities and qualifications

  • You will engage in developing and maintaining metagenomics mapping and analysis pipelines.
  • You will engage in developing and maintaining whole genome sequencing analysis tools.
  • Maintaining and updating the used databases in the group.
  • Maintaining and organizing data storage in the group.
  • You will support other ongoing research projects and activities related to whole genome sequencing and metagenomics analysis.

Candidates should have a two-year master’s degree in bioinformatics or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master’s degree. Preferably the candidate has experience with metagenomics analysis and programming languages (Python/Perl). Experience with Unix shell/command line environments is also preferred.

As a formal qualification, you must have a master’s degree in engineering or equivalent.
