Applications are invited for a three-year Post-Doctoral Research Assistant position to join the lab of DrClaire Thornton at the Royal Veterinary College. The successful applicant will take a leading role in anMRC-funded project targeting mechanisms of mitochondrial fusion to alleviate brain injury in infants following hypoxic-ischaemic insult. We aim to investigate the regulation and function of the mitochondrial pro-fusion protein Optic Atrophy (OPA)1, to determine whether protecting OPA1 activity following hypoxiaischaemia will provide additional neuroprotection for infants where existing therapies are insufficient.

This post offers an exciting opportunity for a talented cell and molecular biologist to investigate cellular metabolism and survival in a variety of neural cells and in vivo models, using techniques including transcriptomics, mitochondrial respiration, live cell imaging and microscopy. The successful applicant will also have the opportunity to work at a collaborator’s lab at King’s College, London (St Thomas’ campus), developing skills in metabolomics.

Applicants must have a PhD in a relevant discipline and first-author publications in neuroscience, mitochondrial biology or a related field. They must possess excellent organisation skills, be highly motivated and be capable of interacting as part of a team. Previous experience in in vivo models, mitochondrial biology or RNASeq would be advantageous.

Prospective applicants are encouraged to contact Dr Thornton by email (cthornton@rvc.ac.uk)
