Two Postdoctoral Research Associate positions are available in the group of Prof Jonathan Clayden for chemists with research experience in organic synthesis and/or supramolecular chemistry. Funded by the recent award of a European Research Council Advanced Grant, the successful applicants will undertake research in the application of synthetic organic chemistry to the design and synthesis of conformationally controlled molecules with biomimetic function. The aim of the project will be to construct functional molecules capable of modulating chemical reactivity and function in response to encoded chemical signals, mimicking and extending the way biological systems process and exploit the information stored in the genetic code. Recent results from related projects have been reported in J. Am Chem. Soc. 2018, 140, 3528-3531, Nature Chemistry 2017, 9, 420-425 and Science 2016, 352, 575-580.

The successful candidates will have, or be working towards, a PhD in organic chemistry. They will have complementary expertise in the fields of molecular synthesis and molecular interactions, but both will have experience of multi-step target-directed organic synthesis and in the characterisation of complex molecules by NMR spectroscopy. Alongside this experience, they will have a fascination with stereochemistry, molecular shape, molecular conformation and/or molecular interactions. They will have an enthusiasm to extend the boundaries of their knowledge and to explore interactions with unfamiliar disciplines. They will have excellent communication and organisational skills, and will be capable of working under their own initiative. They will be expected to interact productively with each other, and with other members of the research group working on related projects.
