The Department of Cell Biology & Anatomy, in partnership with the McCaig Institute for Bone and Joint Health and supported by the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute (ACHRI), in the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary invite applications for a Canada Research Chair (CRC) Tier II in  Paediatric Musculoskeletal Image Science. The successful candidate will be appointed at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor (tenure-track) and will be nominated for a CRC Tier II Chair.

The successful candidate will use image-based, data-driven methods to perform deep phenotyping, an emerging field of precision medicine that provides disease classification.

The position provides 75% protected time for research and will include expectations to contribute to teaching as well as service to the department, faculty, Institutes or University, particularly as this relates to advancing the area of bone and joint health. An essential qualification is a PhD. This is an excellent opportunity to develop an independent, externally-funded research program within a highly collaborative, and forward-thinking environment. The applicant must be able to demonstrate commitment to advancing the principles of equity, diversity and inclusivity in all aspects of their professional activity.

Applicants at the Assistant Professor level should demonstrate a record of peer-reviewed publications, including publications as first or senior author. They should have a track record of peer-reviewed funding at the local and, preferably, national level. Future success in receiving external funding at the level of Tri-Council or equivalent peer reviewed National/International organization should be a realistic goal. In terms of education and teaching, applicants at the Assistant Professor level must show evidence of successful teaching activity and supervision and/or mentorship of trainees, undergraduate and graduate students.

Applicants at the Associate Professor level must present evidence of an established, externally funded (at the level of Tri-Council or equivalent peer reviewed National/International organization) research program, a strong publication record as evidenced by continuous publication in high-ranking journals, including as senior or first author. Applicants must show evidence of successful teaching and/or graduate supervision, and evidence of established academic engagement in professional and other communities.

The ideal candidate will have a strong multidisciplinary education and technical background in computational sciences, medical or pre-clinical imaging (e.g., micro-computed tomography), imaging-informatics, machine learning and/or data science. The candidate’s PhD must be in one of those fields, or demonstrate their research experience through peer-reviewed publications. The chair will be focused on imaging/image science in paediatric musculoskeletal diseases and will work at the nexus of the fields of biology, medicine, and engineering. The Chair will be an important addition to the prolific and diverse research environment for patient-oriented science at the McCaig Institute’s Centre for Mobility and Joint Health (MoJo) and an active collaboration between the McCaig Institute and ACHRI.

Tier II Chairs are intended for exceptional emerging scholars (i.e., candidates must have been an active researcher in their field for fewer than 10 years at the time of nomination). Candidates who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree and who have had career breaks, such as maternity, parental, or extended sick leave, clinical training, etc., may have their eligibility for a Tier II Chair assessed through the program’s Tier II justification process. In cases where the candidate has more than one PhD, or have obtained a professional degree (MD, DVM, etc.) in addition to a PhD, the first of these degrees is used in the 10-year qualification. Exemptions may be granted by providing a formal justification. Research interruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic (e.g., closures) are recognized as, and may be counted as, an eligible delay (credited at twice the amount of time) beginning March 1, 2020.
