Translational Biologist, Oncology

Job Type: 2 year fixed term contract

Astex Pharmaceuticals is a world leader in innovative drug discovery and development. The company has successfully applied its proprietary Fragment-Based Drug Discovery platform to generate multiple new drug candidates that are progressing in clinical development. Successful collaborations have led to two launched oncology drugs (Kisqali® partnered with Novartis and BalversaTM partnered with Janssen). Astex continues to grow and focuses on Oncology and Neurological Disorders.

An opportunity exists for a biologist with a strong scientific background in oncology to contribute to Astex’s expanding drug discovery portfolio. The successful candidate will be highly-motivated with demonstrated technical ability and the capacity to think independently and creatively. They should be excellent communicators, able to interact with internal multi-disciplinary project teams. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about and input into the drug discovery process and contribute to the development of novel new therapies.

Responsibilities

  • Provide laboratory-based in vitro cell biology and in vivo and expertise to generate data to support the preclinical evaluation of compounds and the characterization of pre-clinical biomarkers in oncology indications.
  • Contribute scientific expertise in oncology.
  • Develop a detailed understanding of the literature related to the project and influence the biology within projects, by actively participating in multi-disciplinary project team discussions.
  • Design and implement effective in vitro and in vivo experiments, interpret data, discuss conclusions and present data at various internal forums.
  • Interact with external experts, collaborators and CROs.

Required Experience and Qualifications

  •  PhD in cancer biology or a related field or relevant experience
  • In vivo biology experience with suitable qualifications.
  •  Demonstrable proficiency in a range of cancer related in vitro cell biology techniques.
  •  Strong communication skills and ability to contribute to multidisciplinary project teams.
  •  An evident interest in, and understanding of, the mode of action of new, targeted anti-cancer therapies.
