PhD scholarship in Experimental Investigation of Turbulent Gaseous Jets in Two-stroke Marine Engines

DTU, Department of Mechanical Engineering has a long-time research collaboration with MAN Energy Solution on two-stroke engines for large ships. To reduce carbon footprint, new engine designs aim at using gaseous fuels like methane and ammonia. We want to investigate solutions for premixing gaseous fuels into the engine cylinder. The project is funded by the Danish Energy Agency (EUDP program).

You will play an important role in the work on optimizing a novel premixing process in the engine cylinder during scavenging. Our goal in the project is to investigate the mixing process, to test and develop new nozzle designs and injection strategies and to provide experimental data that can validate numerical simulation. You will work together with a post doc, who will do numerical simulations, and with a large research group in turbulence at DTU Mechanical Engineering.

Responsibilities and qualifications
You will construct and work with a scale model in our laboratory using air at atmospheric pressure as media. The instantaneous concentration and velocity will be measured with high-speed cameras and laser illumination. You will analyze the resulting data to evaluate practical design ideas and to get fundamental insight to flow phenomena related to turbulent mixing. The project therefore also has an element of fundamental research. Finally you will collaborate with MAN Energy Solution on full scale measurements on their test engine.

You will be responsible for:

  • Construction of the experimental setup with support from our workshop and our technical staff
  • Adaption of measurement techniques for the experimental setup
  • Execution of measurements
  • Development of script-based programs for processing data
  • Analysis and interpretation of experimental results
  • Collaboration with engineers at MAN Energy Solution and with researchers at DTU
  • Writing scientific papers for international journals and conferences.

You should have experience with:

  • General fluid mechanics
  • Mechanical engineering design
  • Laboratory work, preferably with fluid mechanical measurements
  • Programming of script-based data processing with e.g. MATLAB or Python

Furthermore, organizational skills and experience with project management is an advantage.

Candidates should have a two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master’s degree.
