The PhD researcher will be associated with the European Research Council-funded project “STEMMA: Systems of Transmitting Early Modern Manuscript Verse, 1475–1700.” The successful applicant will be a member of a project team that also includes the principal investigator and three postdoctoral researchers. The PhD will the circulation of verse between manuscript and print for centuries after the introduction of printing with movable type. Using the datasets prepared by the project team alongside library catalogues and finding aids, the doctoral researcher will identify manuscript volumes likely to have been copied from printed sources. The researcher will then conduct targeted research trips to overseas libraries and archives to photograph and inventorise relevant manuscripts before returning to the host institution to identify print sources and analyse results with other members of the research team.

Academic Entry Requirements:
Required
- An honours BA with a minimum degree result of a high 2.1 or international equivalent.
- Prior study of early modern literature and/or history.
- Minimum IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent (only applicable for students who have not earned a previous degree in an English-speaking context).
Desirable
- Previous experience with English paleography and/or codicology.
- A demonstrable interest in book history, textual editing, and/or digital humanities.
- A good reading knowledge of Latin and/or another European language.
- A Master’s-level qualification.
