SNF-Funded Postdoctoral Fellowship, 100% Neuchâtel, Switzerland

General information:

  • The Institute of Philosophy at the University of Neuchâtel seeks to appoint one postdoctoral fellow in connection with the SNF-project, “An Ontology of Production, Products and By-Products”, led by Oliver Massin and Kathrin Koslicki.
  • The goal of this project is to develop and implement an ontology of human-made products and by-products by way of a detailed study of the ontology of artifacts (subproject 1) as well as the ontology of wealth and economic goods (subproject 2).

Salary: Year 1: CHF 88¢777 (CHF 6¢829/month); Year 2: CHF 91¢165 (CHF 7¢013/month); Year 3: CHF 93¢553 (CHF 7¢196/month); Year 4: CHF 95¢942 (CHF 7¢380/month).

Job Description:

  • Single- and co-authored publications related to the postdoctoral project.
  • Presentations of postdoctoral research at national and international conferences.
  • Ontology construction using the tools of first-order logic, OWL (Web Ontology Language) and Protégé (a free and open-source platform for constructing ontologies).
  • Assistance with editorial work.
  • Organization of workshops and conferences.
  • Assistance with funding applications.
  • Maintenance of project website.
  • Logistics connected with project partner visits.
  • Active engagement in the development of the Institute of Philosophy (promotion of philosophy to prospective students, etc.).
  • Participation in the weekly research symposium as well as other symposia and conferences organized by the Institute of Philosophy.
  • Participation in professional training.
  • Regular presence at Institute (an office and IT equipment will be provided).
  • Teaching: two hours per week, related to the project.
  • Participation in the evaluation and proctoring of exams.
  • Advising and mentoring students.

Qualifications:

  • Applicants must have a PhD in philosophy.
  • Extensive background in metaphysics, social ontology, philosophy of action, philosophy of economics, or related areas relevant to a study of the ontology of artifacts (subproject 1) and/or the ontology of wealth and economic goods (subproject 2).
  • Curiosity and an established track record of original research.
  • Passion for teaching.
  • Knowledge of English (fluent) required; mastery of, or willingness to learn, French.
