Background

A key goal of the Wellcome Sanger Institute Parasites and Microbes Programme is to chart the evolutionary trajectory of important pathogen and vector species by genomic analysis of longitudinally collected samples at multiple locations around the world, in collaboration with a large international network of researchers and disease control programmes. In parallel with our basic scientific research, we aim to develop new ways to translate genomic data into decision support tools that will enable national and international public health agencies to control and eventually eliminate major endemic diseases of the developing world.

The Parasites and Microbes Programme Associate Faculty are world-leaders in mathematical and computational approaches to infectious disease epidemiology and public health, who based at other institutions and are working alongside Sanger investigators to develop a comprehensive vision for the integration of modelling and genomics in the context of global infectious disease surveillance and control.

The Sanger Epidemiological and Evolutionary Dynamics (SEED) Postdoctoral Programme aims to bring state-of-the-art analytical methods together with large-scale genomic datasets to address fundamental problems concerning the evolution, transmission dynamics and control of major infectious diseases. Each project is co-supervised by an Associate Faculty member and a Sanger Group Leader, and where appropriate there can be more than two supervisors. By linking projects to both Associate and Core Faculty, we bring together a supervisory team comprising world leaders in genomics, infectious disease epidemiology and mathematical modelling.

This Postdoctoral Programme provides many opportunities for international collaboration and is based at the Wellcome Genome Campus, where our researchers have easy access to scientific expertise, well-equipped facilities and an active seminar programme.

SEED Postdoctoral Fellowships are based at the Wellcome Sanger Institute and include:

  • Salary currently £32,780 – £41,093
