Doctoral studentships in coastal blue carbon science, focusing on the Baltic Sea region

Södertörn University in south Stockholm is a dynamic institute of higher education with a unique profile and high academic standard. A large proportion of the university staff holds doctorates and there is a strong link between undergraduate education and research. Södertörn University has around 11 000 students and 840 employees. Environmental Science is a broad interdisciplinary research subject that examines societal interactions with natural values, processes and resources. Environmental Science covers the study of ecological, climatic and other natural processes that affect ecosystems over space and time, human-induced environmental problems, and environmental policy, governance and sustainability challenges. Knowledge in both natural and social sciences is necessary for the understanding of environmental and more broadly, sustainability challenges. Research in Environmental Science at Södertörn University focuses on two integrated themes: (1) Sustainability Challenges and Pathways and (2) Environment. These themes, as well as research in Environmental Science at Södertörn University, are described in more detail here.

Description
These doctoral positions are funded by the Foundation for Baltic and East European Studies and are located within the CLIM-SCAPE project: “Climate change mitigation capacity of the Baltic coastal seascape: identification of hotspot environments for coastal blue carbon sequestration and guidance for sustainable management of the Baltic coastal landscapes under global change (CLIM-SCAPE)”. One doctoral student will focus on understanding multiple coastal habitats’ carbon sink functions (i.e. carbon stock levels, carbon accumulation rates and greenhouse gas exchange) across the land-sea continuum, while the other doctoral student will focus on the influence of seascape configuration and connectivity (export and fate carbon) on blue carbon sequestration capacity, coupled to the distribution of blue forest habitats and contemporary land use. Further reading about the project, see https://ostersjostiftelsen.se/en/the-foundation-supports-14-research-projects-about-the-baltic-sea-region-and-eastern-europe/). The project will be conducted using an international and transdisciplinary research team.
