The Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences at Simon Fraser University invites applications for the Farley Distinguished Visiting Scholar in History for the 2019-20 academic year. The Farley Distinguished Visiting Scholar is dedicated to the teaching of history, which is understood to include studies of the past, including the recent past, carried out within the departments and programs of the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences. The Farley Distinguished Visiting Scholar is appointed as a Visiting Faculty Member for up to any two terms in an academic year. SFU operates year-round, with Fall, Winter, and Summer terms. Visiting Scholars are expected to have extensive interaction with faculty and students. They normally teach at least one course or other type of relevant class. It is also expected that Visiting Scholars engage in public outreach, which could consist in a public lecture or take some other form. The stipend for the Farley Distinguished Visiting Scholar is up to CAD 45,000 (commensurate with length of visit).
Applications should include a current CV and a cover letter outlining the following:
- a research plan for the tenure of the Visiting Scholar position;
- a brief description of an advanced undergraduate/graduate level course. (Please note that students from a range of disciplinary backgrounds will be able to register for the course.);
- a brief account of the topic of the public lecture or of another form of public outreach; and
- names of 3 referees.
In keeping with University policy, the successful candidate will hold an academic position at another university, or an equivalent position at another appropriate institution.
