Applicants at any level or rank who have completed their Ph.D. may receive a four-month fellowship to pursue advanced research or revise research for publication. Stipend: up to $16,800.
Dissertation Fellowships
Doctoral candidates conducting research or writing a dissertation receive four- to nine-month fellowships. Stipend: up to $7,000 per semester.
Short-Term Fellowships
Academic, museum, and independent scholars, including graduate students receive one- to three-month short term fellowships. Stipend: $1,750 per month. Applicants need not apply for a specific named fellowship, but we do designate certain awards as:
- Faith Andrews Fellowships for the study of Shaker life and material culture
- Robert Lee Gill Fellowships for research on American decorative arts, painting, architecture, or historic preservation
- Cheryl A. Robertson Fellowships for the study of American domestic life and material culture
Maker-Creator Fellowships
For 2018-2019 the Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library will once again be offering short-term “Maker-Creator” Fellowships. These 1-3 month fellowships are designed for artists, writers, filmmakers, horticulturalists, craftspeople, and others who wish to examine, study, and immerse themselves in Winterthur’s vast collections in order to inspire creative and artistic works for general, non-academic audiences. The aim of this initiative is to open our collections to a wider audience who can interpret the past and our collections in unique and imaginative ways outside of traditional academic avenues. Stipend: $1,750 per month.
Please note that all short-term and long-term fellowships recipients are offered on-site housing. However, recipients are welcome to commute from their own homes in the region. Winterthur does require that fellows be on-site at Winterthur at least 4 days per week in order to fulfill the fellowship.
Affiliated Researchers
Winterthur’s Research Fellowship Program also includes an appointed number of Affiliated Researchers, a group which is comprised of graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, senior and junior faculty, as well as independent scholars. Researchers who can provide their own financial support are given access to our museum, library, and garden collections; invited to join in events and lectures; and, on a short-term basis, offered workspace in our research building when available.
