How to Apply for an  IACS Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The Institute for Advanced Computational Science offers a limited competition awarding up to 2 postdoctoral fellows per year. Postdoctoral Fellowships are intended for outstanding candidates with recent PhDs who wish to conduct computational-related research at the Institute under the mentorship of core or affiliate IACS faculty researchers.

Postdoctoral Fellows at IACS will play a strong role in the overall life of the institute, which is comprised of 13 core and ~45 affiliate faculty spanning chemistry, materials by design, condensed matter, astrophysics, atmospheric science, nanoscience, linguistics, ecology, applied mathematics, computer science, biomedical informatics, civil engineering, electrical and computer engineering, music, neurobiology and behavior, psychology, and sociology. The Postdoctoral Fellow is expected to participate in full-time advanced research training under the general guidance of one or more faculty mentors, and the Fellow will be supported independently by IACS with a nationally competitive stipend.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will be provided medical benefits as well as an equipment/travel allowance of up to $10,000.

The IACS Postdoctoral Fellowship is a 2-year term with the option for renewal for one additional year subject to review of performance.

IACS Postdoctoral Fellows will be expected to participate fully in the research life at IACS, including, but not limited to, presenting at Research Day; attending and/or facilitating IACS seminars and brown bag lunches; leading educational workshops within their expertise; serving as a mentor for enrolled students; participating in professional development opportunities; and attending professional conferences on behalf of the institute.

Workspace will be provided within the institute.

Application process

Applications will be due by November 1, 2020.

Postdoctoral Fellows applying by November 1, 2020 will start on or after May 1, 2021.

Step 1:

Potential Postdoctoral Fellows should identify potential research faculty mentors from Stony Brook University by viewing the “Mentors” list above.

Step 2:

The applicant should contact the faculty member(s) with whom they hope to work. The selected faculty member will need to write a letter of support for the applicant expressing why he/she believes the applicant will be a good fit for their research group and IACS as a whole.

Step 3:

Apply Here

Applications include:

  • A document that identifies potential research faculty mentors from Stony Brook University
  • CV (including publications, conference participation, and teaching experience) and cover letter
  • Personal Statement: 1 – 2 pages highlighting the following:

          Career goals
Commitment to teaching
Research experience
Teaching experience
Potential Research Mentors

  • 3 Letters of Recommendation: One of these letters should ideally be from the candidate’s PhD advisor/PI, but it is not a requirement. These may be emailed by their authors directly to  iacs@stonybrook.edu. Applicant’s name should be in the subject heading.

Applicants are responsible for ensuring that all items are submitted on time.

Review process

The selection committee will be comprised of the IACS Director, Deputy Director, and Educational Program Manager in combination with two IACS faculty members.

The previous cohort of Fellows are expected to serve as members of the review committee for up to two competition years following the start of their tenure. The selection committee will review the application materials. The selected candidates will be invited to participate in pre-selection interviews that take place by video conference. Short-listed applicants will be invited to a final round of face-to-face panel interviews with a number of IACS faculty. These will take place in the spring, ahead of Fellows beginning their Fellowship year in the summer. Final selection is immediately followed by an announcement of our new cohort of IACS Postdoctoral Fellows.

Appointed Postdoctoral Fellows will serve a 2-year minimum appointment with the possibility of a 1-year renewal for a maximum Postdoctoral Fellowship of 3 years.

Renewal of the Postdoctoral Fellowship is contingent upon the Fellows’ contribution to scientific excellence and their level of engagement within the Institute (i.e. participation in seminars, Research Day, etc.).

Review criteria:

  • Academic excellence
  • Research experience
  • Teaching experience
  • Potential to advance the Institute’s mission; to advance the intellectual foundations of computation and data with high-impact applications in engineering and the physical, environmental, life sciences and the humanities; and to emphasize excellence and diversity in coordination with academic units across Stony Brook.
